A developing wave of low pressure brought light precipitation to the mid-Atlantic on the morning of January 5, 2022. Warm air advection caused rising temperatures aloft over the region. However, surface temperatures were initially sub-freezing, and in some cases took several hours after precipitation began to move above freezing. This caused freezing rain to fall. A widespread light icing event transpired across the eastern mid-Atlantic as a result of this. While ice accumulations were no more than several hundredths of an inch, this event caused significant travel impacts during the busy morning commute hours of January 5.

.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure along the east coast moves offshore into
Wednesday as a low crosses the Great Lakes region. Weak high
pressure will briefly affect the area Thursday, before a coastal
storm system impacts the area Thursday night into Friday. High
pressure is once again expected to briefly affect the area
Saturday, before a cold front approaches Sunday into Sunday
night. High pressure returns early next week.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH WEDNESDAY NIGHT/...
As of 130 AM, hourly temperatures continue to be rather
challenging however satellite imagery does show clouds on the
increase across much of the area now. These are the high level
clouds overall at first. The lack of lower and thicker clouds
thus far has resulted in temperatures tanking across some areas
especially where deeper snow cover exists, such as far southern
New Jersey into Delmarva. Temperatures were therefore adjusted
quite a bit. This will have some implications toward daybreak as
the low-level moisture is forecast to rapidly increase from the
south. The airmass is still rather dry, therefore it will take
some time. As the clouds increase and lower toward daybreak,
temperatures are expected to increase some.
Otherwise, some moisture may arrive before the coldest air is
scoured out and therefore the possibility of some light freezing
rain or freezing drizzle may develop. We have decided to raise a
Winter Weather Advisory for this possibility. Overall totals will be
very light, but any freezing rain may adhere to roads/sidewalks and
make travel difficult.
Any freezing rain or freezing drizzle possibilities decrease over
south NJ and Delmarva after 12Z, but then will affect the
north/western areas, so the advisory will continue across these
areas until noon. Elsewhere, rains and fog will be across the
ern/southern areas Wednesday with only a chance for wrn areas. Under
a freshening S/SW wind, milder air will arrive across the region
with highs topping out in the low/mid 40s for most areas. Rains will
end from W to E thru the afternoon, but skies should remain cloudy.
A cold front will cross the area during the late afternoon.
Wednesday night...Drier air will deepen over the area following the
cold front. High pressure well to the west will help bring cooler
air into the area. Under partly cloudy skies, temperatures will
lower into the mid/upper 20s for the N/W counties and low/mid 30s
for Delmarva and metro Philadelphia. Winds will be mostly West
averaging about 10 mph.

.SHORT TERM /THURSDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...
A trailing frontal boundary associated with Wednesday's system
will be stalled near the coast for Thursday and this will extend
south and west to a new area of low pressure starting to take
shape near the Gulf coast. Between these systems Thursday should
feature fair weather under increasing mid and high level
cloudiness. Temperatures will be seasonable with highs mostly in
the 30s to low 40s.
The forecast gets interesting again Thursday night into Friday
as the next coastal storm continues to develop and then move
north. The deterministic model guidance has generally shifted a
bit farther south/east with the track of the low over the past
24 hours while ensemble guidance continues to hint at a track
farther north and west. Thus, still lots of uncertainty
regarding the track of the low and its impacts at a given
location. At this time general model consensus brings most of
the forecast area at least some accumulating snow and this is
highlighted by the latest forecast. Within this broader area of
snowfall though there will be the potential for an area of heavy
snow to set up with 4-6+ inches of accumulation. A low track
near the coast would result in snow changing to rain near the
coast with higher totals N/W of the urban corridor while a track
farther S/E would bring the higher totals near or even S/E of
the urban corridor similar to Monday's system. Please continue
to monitor the forecast for updates as we refine this over the
next day or two. Period of greatest concern looks to be
overnight Thursday night into Friday morning with the low
quickly exiting in the afternoon. Strong NW winds gusting 20 to
30 mph should follow in it's wake by this time though.

.LONG TERM /FRIDAY NIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY/...
The pattern remains progressive with Friday's storm quickly moving
away Friday night into Saturday as high pressure returns with fair
and chilly weather. However the next system will follow quickly on
its heals for Saturday night into Sunday but this low will be
tracking much farther north/west over Ontario / Quebec putting
us on its warmer side. As a result this should be mainly a rain
event, except possibly some snow or mixed precip at the
onset...especially over the southern Poconos. Much of the area
should see highs Sunday into the 40s to potentially even some
low 50s. The warmer temperatures will be short lived as a strong
cold front moves through in the system's wake Sunday night
bringing colder weather to start next week.

.AVIATION /07Z WEDNESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...
The following discussion is for KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE, KRDG,
KILG, KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas.
Overnight...VFR ceilings develop and lower to MVFR or IFR closer to
daybreak. Some light freezing rain or freezing drizzle should
develop closer to 12z. Light and variable or calm winds to locally
light southerly. Low confidence on the timing details of flight
category changes.
Wednesday...MVFR/IFR due to low clouds and some light freezing
drizzle/rain to rain. Any rain should be more confined to along the
coast in the afternoon before shifting offshore. Light and variable
winds becoming south to southwest 4-8 knots. Southwesterly winds
near 2000 feet increase to around 45 knots, therefore a period of
low-level wind shear is expected. Low confidence on the timing
details of the flight category changes and the extent of the sub-VFR
conditions.
Wednesday night...Any MVFR ceilings should quickly improve to VFR in
the evening. Southwest winds near 5 knots, becoming west to
west-northwest 10 knots or less. Moderate confidence.
Outlook...
Thursday...Mostly VFR conditions expected. Westerly winds 5 to 15
knots. Moderate confidence.
Thursday night through Friday...MVFR or lower with snow likely.
Light and variable winds Thursday night, becoming northwesterly 10
to 20 knots with higher gusts on Friday. Low confidence.
Friday night and Saturday...Returning to VFR conditions with 5 to 10
knot northwesterly winds. Low confidence.
Sunday...MVFR or lower conditions likely with rain, possibly
starting briefly as snow at RDG and ABE. SW winds 10 to 15
knots with higher gusts possible.

Rather tranquil conditions on the waters this evening with slowly
increasing winds late. Winds and seas build Wednesday but mostly
hold just short of SCA criteria overall. SCA flags may be needed for
late afternoon and into the evening Wednesday, but confid in this
occurring is not the best attm. Fair much of tonight then rain or
drizzle and fog developing late and lasting into Wed morning.
Outlook...
Thursday...NW winds will be near to potentially just over SCA
criteria to start the day but then will diminish.
Thursday night through Friday night...With an approaching storm
system, we will likely see a prolonged period of at least SCA
conditions, and possibly exceeding gale conditions.
Saturday...Once winds and seas diminish Saturday morning, they
should stay below SCA criteria.
Sunday...Winds increase out of the southwest with SCA conditions
possible.
