Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Elko NV 315 AM PST Wed Jan 5 2022 .SYNOPSIS...An active weather pattern will continue across northern Nevada through Thursday with higher elevation snow and a mix of rain and snow in lower valleys through today. Gusty winds are expected again this morning and afternoon mainly for northeastern Nevada. Quieter conditions are expected tomorrow with a weak disturbance bringing additional light precipitation to the area through late Friday. A cold high pressure system sets up over the region for the weekend into early next week. && .SHORT TERM...Today through Thursday night. Radar is showing some echoes across northeast Elko county this morning. A few sites did report light rain and snow during the overnight but amounts were minimal. Went ahead and canceled the winter weather advisory for Humboldt county early but kept the other zones intact per latest radar and near term progs. For today, a long wave upper low will be centered over the Great Lakes region with an upper ridge in the eastern Pacific. Northwest flow will keep moisture in the area, especially over northern and northeastern Nevada, hence keeping the advisories going until 10AM. Winds will be breezy to locally windy, with I-80 near West Wendover being very windy. Previous shift issued a wind advisory and have continued this product. Winds of 50 mph are possible along the I-80 corridor. Isolated to scattered showers will be possible over the northern sections of the forecast area, northern Humboldt but more importantly, northern and northeastern Elko county. Accumulations of up to an inch are possible in the valleys. The ridge will build and cause heights to rise during the overnight. Still expecting some light shower activity in the north though as the moisture remains. Overnight lows will be in the 20s and 30s. On Thursday, heights will continue their slow rise, but moisture in northern Nevada will remain such that isolated showers can't be ruled out. For central Nevada, the air mass should be dry enough so that skies will become mostly sunny. Highs will be in the low to upper 40s. Winds will be light though could get a bit breezy in the north, mainly north of I-80. There will be some quick clearing during the overnight on Thursday but a shortwave in the flow will move through the area late Thursday night with another chance for showers, mainly north of US Highway 50. Overnight lows will be in the 20s. .LONG TERM...Friday through next Tuesday. Another trof quickly moves through on Friday through Saturday morning. Snow levels will be on the rise some through the day on Friday to provide for a valley mix of rain and snow before lowering to valley floors Friday night as the cold front moves through. However, showers will be on the decline behind the front except for the mountains of Elko County, which will limit valley accumulations. Some valleys could see up to an inch of snow when all is said and done. Showers will likely remain generally north of US Hwy 50. Highs on Friday will be in the lower to middle 40's and lows Friday night will be in the mid teens to mid 20's. Winds will be breezy with this system, with some stronger gusty winds in the mountains. Good confidence that ridging will build in on Saturday night, which will continue through Tuesday, though a cut off low will form south of Nevada towards the end of the long term period. This is not expected to impact the weather here, however, so fair weather is expected with just some clouds around at times under the dirty ridge. High temperatures on Saturday will be in the 30's to lower 40's and then some minor cooling into the upper 20's to upper 30's is expected on Sunday through Tuesday, which is around normal for this time of year. Cooler mornings are expected though, with lows in the single digits through the teens. Winds will be lighter under ridging. && .AVIATION...KWMC, KBAM, and KEKO continue to see precipitation spread across northern Nevada. Occasional MVFR conditions are possible through the early morning hours before showers taper off in the vicinity of these sites. Breezy to gusty winds out of the SSW continue through the afternoon.
