.SYNOPSIS...09/1158 AM.

Cool temperatures are expected for the next few days with areas
of gusty winds and reoccurring Sundowner winds. Gusty winds
continue over the coastal waters through the week. Temperatures
begin to warm Thursday. A significant warm up is on tap for
Friday and the weekend.

&&

.SHORT TERM (TDY-THU)...09/142 PM.

Today, upper level flow will become more westerly as the low just
off the Pacific Northwest Coast digs south. This will lead to
falling heights and keep the pressure gradient strong over the
area. Temperatures will struggle to warm with highs in the 50s to
mid 60s for San Luis Obispo and higher elevations. Should see
some warmer 60s to low 70s for the remaining areas, warmest over
the LA Basin and valleys. Winds are breezy over southwestern Santa
Barbara County with northwest winds currently gusting from 20-30
mph. With gusts up to 35 mph expected, wind advisories were issued
in effect from 3PM until 8PM. The current wind advisories for
western portions of the Santa Barbara south coast look on track
for tonight, with gusts up to 50 mph expected.

Tuesday, a trough from the approaching low system pushes through,
serving to boost wind speeds over the region. Gusty north/northwest
winds persist along the Santa Barbara South Coast, and expecting
increasing for the Central Coast and Ventura County Coast,
especially near Point Conception. Additional wind advisories may
be needed, but will wait on further guidance prior to issuing any
advisories.

The upper level low is forecast to push through the region late
Tuesday/early Wednesday, with good agreement between the models.
This should be a dry system, with low PWAT values near 0.25
inches. Look for a few more degrees of cooling and then a windy
afternoon and overnight period. Strong advisory level winds are
likely Wednesday for the SBA/VTA/LA mtns, the Antelope Vly and the
SBA south coast. Near advisory level winds are expected for the
coasts.

Overnight lows will be unseasonably cool tonight and Tuesday night.
Sheltered areas are expected to drop into the upper 30s and 40s
with lower 30s possible in the interior of SLO County. May need
frost advisories for the southern Salinas Valley and the Ojai
Valley. Mountain areas will be even colder. Lockwood Valley in th
VTA mtns, for example, will likely see overnight lows in the mid
20s each night.

***From Previous Discussion***

Brisk WNW flow is over Srn CA in the wake of a weak trof passage.
Cool air advection and the NW flow has scoured out most of the
clouds with only some clouds over the eastern San Gabriel Range
and Catalina. Lower than normal hgts and stronger than normal
onshore flow will conspire to keep max temps 5 to 10 locally 15
degrees blo normal. Winds have died over across the area and all
of the wind products have been taken down. The strong flow will
generate stronger than normal winds but will only local advisory
level gusts. Later this afternoon advisory level north winds will
squirt through the passes and canyons across the western half of
the SBA south coast.

On Tuesday the upper level flow will turn to the SW in response to
an upper level low pushing out of the Pac NW and into Nrn CA.
Moderate onshore flow will continue to the east and weak offshore
flow will continue from the north. While continued cool air
advection will keep the stratus at bay some mid and high level
clouds embedded in the upper flow will turn the skies partly to
mostly cloudy esp in the morning. It will continue to be breezy
but the winds will be weaker than today. Temps will change little
from today and will remain well below normal.

Short range deterministic mdls as well as their ensemble
counterparts agree that an upper low will mover through the center
of the state and a fairly sharp trof will drag through Srn CA.
Despite -27 degree C 500 mb temps LIs remain positive and more
importantly PWATs will be near a quarter inch. So this will be dry
trof passage. Look for a few more degrees of cooling and then a
windy afternoon and overnight period. Strong advisory level winds
are likely for the SBA/VTA/LA mtns, the Antelope Vly and the SBA
south coast.

.LONG TERM (FRI-MON)...09/1152 AM.

Weaker upper level northwest flow is expected to start off the
extended on Thursday, with some divergence in the ensembles
regarding whether flow will be more west or northerly. Heights
trend upward into the weekend as low pressure wanes and an upper
level ridge builds in. Models are in good agreement Friday, with a
strong northerly pressure gradient peaking near -7 mb. This
gradient could drive a significant north wind event in the
mountains. Offshore flow combined with ridging will create more
significant warming Friday, with the region becoming hot over the
weekend. Saturday, gradients shift to favor afternoon onshore
flow, with potential for marine layer clouds and fog by Saturday
night. May see more significant marine layer Sunday, as the GFS
has the LAX-DAG onshore gradient peaking at 8 mb. However, there
is lower confidence as ensembles disagree on the strength of
onshore flow.

Good confidence in weekend warming but less confidence on how
much the coasts will warm up due to the differences in the sfc
pressure gradients. Sunday will be the warmest day with highs in
the 90s across most of the vlys and all max temps 10 to 15 degrees
above normal.

.AVIATION...10/0042Z.

At 0000Z at KLAX, there was no marine layer nor inversion.

Overall, high confidence in TAFs. There is a 20% chance of MVFR
conds at KLGB and KPRB late tonight. Gusty winds could cause some
turbulence, UDDFS and LLWS near the higher terrain at times.

KLAX...High confidence in TAF. There is a 20% chance of a 8-10kt
east wind component from 10-16Z.

KBUR...High confidence in TAF.

.MARINE...09/141 PM.

A few changes have been made to the marine forecast in the morning
update. GALE WARNINGS have been added to zones 673, 676, and 650.

For the Outer Waters, moderate confidence in current forecast.
The latest guidance now shows a better chance of GALE FORCE winds
in a region from the Channel Islands southward to San Nicolas
Island, including portions of zones 673 and 676, so a GALE WARNING
has been posted for the late afternoon and evening hours in those
zones. Similar conditions are possible (50 percent chance) Tuesday
afternoon and evening, so a GALE WATCH will be posted this
afternoon in 673 and 676 for Tuesday afternoon and evening.

For the Inner Waters north of Point Sal, high confidence in
current forecast. Today through Friday, high confidence in SCA
level winds, especially in the afternoon and evening hours.

For the Inner Waters south of Point Conception, moderate
confidence in current forecast. The latest guidance also suggests
that GALE WARNING level winds are possible across the western
portion of the Santa Barbara Channel late this afternoon and
evening, so a GALE WARNING has been posted accordingly. SCA level
winds are still expected in the southern inner waters this
afternoon, although a random gust to 35 knots in the northwest
portion of zone 655 is not out of the question. For Tuesday
through Thursday, SCA level winds can be expected in the western
portions of the inner waters each afternoon and evening. On
Friday, winds and seas are generally expected to be below SCA
levels, although there is a 50% chance of SCA level winds across
the western half of the Santa Barbara Channel.

.BEACHES...09/139 PM.

Other than Channel Islands Harbor, do not see any reports that
warrant the extension of the Beach Hazards Statement, so the
statement will be canceled this afternoon.

Dangerous rip currents and elevated surf will continue along the
local beaches through this afternoon. North of Point Conception,
surf heights 5 to 8 feet are expected with 3 to 6 foot surf south
of Point Conception. Given the elevated surf and rip current
activity, a BEACH HAZARDS STATEMENT will be in effect until 300 PM
this afternoon.
