Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Hanford CA 350 AM PDT Tue Aug 16 2022 .SYNOPSIS... Excessive heat will plague the area throughout the week, especially today and Wednesday. Additionally, monsoonal moisture will make it into the area today through Friday, leading to a chance of mountain showers and thunderstorms each afternoon. Dry weather with temperatures closer to normal are forecast by next Sunday and Monday. && .DISCUSSION... A significant warmup is underway across central California as a ridge of high pressure strengthens over the western states. Highs Monday were around 4-8 degrees above normal and will trend upward a few more degrees for today. According to blended model guidance, probabilities across most San Joaquin Valley locations are around 50 to 70 percent for high temperatures of 105 degrees or more this afternoon and again Wednesday. These temperatures will create a high risk for heat related illness across much of the San Joaquin Valley and lower adjacent foothills. An Excessive Heat Warning is in effect for both Today and Wednesday. In addition, as a northward transport of moisture edges into our area, pw values increase to as high as 1 inch today over the Sierra Nevada. This will allow for scattered convective activity over higher elevations this afternoon, with probabilities up to 35-40 percent. The storms could produce brief periods of locally heavy rain. Guidance shows similar activity for Wednesday. Some very slight relief from the heat is in store for the latter half of the week as ensemble model solutions show the ridge weakening somewhat. High temperatures will be a few degrees lower during this period and heat risk will be mostly moderate across the Valley. A Heat Advisory is in effect for these days. Moisture will be shunted eastward as well and thunderstorm risk over the Sierra will also decrease. The start of next week will bring more significant decreases in temperatures, and by Monday, probabilities of reaching triple digits in the San Joaquin Valley are only around 20 to 25 percent. && .AVIATION...
