What happened

The episode as NWS AJK wrote it up.

.SHORT TERM...A high-pressure ridge across the southern portion
of the panhandle will move into Canada. A weather system is in the
process of traveling east along and south of the central gulf
coast. It will move to the north-central panhandle by late
afternoon and Tuesday evening. Snow has started in the Yakutat
area and will increase in snow rates through the morning. The snow
will then spread into the north-central panhandle for the main
axis late in the afternoon and then move southward to the southern
half north of the Dixon Entrance. Winter storm warnings persist
for the Yakutat, Cross Sound, and Petersburg/Wrangell area today
and tonight for 5 to 9 inches of snow. Along the rest of the Icy
Strait, corridor Gustavus/Hoonah to Juneau is under an advisory
for 3 to 5 inches.

At 500 Mb the ridge over the Gulf of Alaska flattened to let the
shortwave ride over the top through Tuesday and begins to rebuild
after it leading to a southerly track to the front through the
panhandle. The rebuilding ridge also will allow the precip to
begin tapering off over the northeast gulf coast and northern
panhandle late Tuesday night.

A narrow band of small craft and gale-force winds in the outer
coastal zones Tuesday morning, and seas in the 6 to 10 ft range
building to 10 to 15 ft as the front moves through the area.
Meanwhile, generally lighter winds for the inner channel
forecasts, as the front start to move through there will be a
brief rise to 20 to 25 kt.

.LONG TERM...Precipitation will diminish through the day on
Wednesday as the front steadily weakens. By the late afternoon
period, most of the panhandle will be free of precipitation
with the exception some scattered pockets of rain and snow in
some of the far Southern areas and the Outer Coast. High pressure
will rebuild over BC, leading to clearing skies across the area.
This could lead to the possibility of some fog across parts of the
area Wed night, though confidence in this is still low. Cloud
cover will return through Thursday as the next major front
approaches from the West. Guidance begins to diverge past this
point, but it is looking increasingly likely that precipitation
and windy conditions will return Friday or early Saturday.
Anticipate precipitation to remain throughout the weekend as a
wave forms along the front and races N, though substantial
disagreements in timing and location of the wave still remain.
Believe that most of the precipitation will be rain as warmer
temperatures aloft make efficient snow production a greater
challenge, but cannot rule out the possibility of some snow just
yet. Beyond this time period, the pattern continues to look
active, but details become increasingly difficult to resolve with
confidence.
