What happened

The episode as NWS PHI wrote it up.

A mesoscale convective system tracking along a warm front moved through much of Pennsylvania during the late afternoon and evening of July 11. With a warm and moist air mass in place, storms maintained organization into the early overnight hours. They finally began to lose intensity heading towards the Pocono region of Pennsylvania due to a loss of surface based instability and a transition to an outflow-dominant storm mode. However, a couple instances of damaging winds were observed as far northeast as the Poconos.

Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Mount Holly NJ

.SYNOPSIS...
A warm front will stall across northern New Jersey or southern New
York tonight. The front will settle south on Monday before lifting
north again out of the area late on Tuesday. Unsettled weather
will largely dominate through the middle of the week as several
disturbances ride along a stalled cold front across the Great
Lakes. This same cold front will approach the area on the
weekend, but might not pass all the way off the coast until late
Sunday.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH MONDAY NIGHT/...
A strong QLCS has pushed across central PA and is nearing our
northwestern forecast zones. Although effective shear remains
modest around 30-35 kts, waning instability should result in a
general weakening trend of this feature through midnight. The
CAM guidance suggests it will stall out into the I-78 corridor
as it dissipates into the overnight. Meanwhile, a few isolated
strong to severe wind gusts may be possible with this line.

High pressure has shifted to the east and will move offshore of New
England this evening. Meanwhile, a warm front lifts northward into
our area tonight.

The southeast flow across southern New Jersey along with the bay
breeze across Delaware has helped to clear the skies out and is
clearly visible on satellite this afternoon, which has also helped
to stabilize the atmosphere in these areas. Showers and
thunderstorms are developing across Maryland/Virginia and southern
Pennsylvania this afternoon as another shortwave moves through the
region. Dew points across Delmarva extending up into eastern
Pennsylvania are in the low to mid 70s and any showers or storms
that move through here through this evening could be heavy.

The warm front lifts north of the area by Monday morning before
stalling, eventually drifting back south Monday night.

Daytime heating will help to destabilize the region as we should be
well within the warm sector. Dew points will rise in the mid to
upper 70s across the area providing sufficient moisture. With a
shortwave crossing the area and the front hanging around nearby, we
should see showers and thunderstorms develop by the early afternoon.
Convective parameters aren't fantastic but there is decent CAPE and
we could see some strong to severe storms, mainly across our
northern areas. Additionally, with the surge in moisture, PWATs will
be in excess of 2" and heavy rain will be the main hazard as we head
through Monday afternoon and into the overnight period. Some
guidance is hinting at training cells near the stalled frontal
boundary, which can translate into an area of 1-3" amounts, with
some places possibly seeing 4"+. With multiple periods of heavy rain
across northern New Jersey this past week, our FFG values are
relatively low. Therefore, we have issued a Flash Flood Watch for
portions of central and northern New Jersey from Monday afternoon
through Monday night. The heaviest of the rain may fall during the
overnight period.

Daytime highs will be in the upper 80s to lower 90s. With the
exceptionally moist air arriving and the dew points in the low
to mid 70s, it will start to feel like it is in the upper 90s
to low 100s, mainly through the urban corridor and into southern
New Jersey and Delmarva. Have gone ahead and issued a Heat
Advisory with the early evening forecast update for areas with
the highest confidence of reaching criteria for 2 or more hours.
Locations near and north of Trenton are forecast to have more
cloud cover and thus lower temperatures during the afternoon.
Areas towards the coast should remain cooler as the flow will be
a bit more south to southeast, especially the northern New
Jersey coast which will be closer to the stalled boundary.

&&

.SHORT TERM /TUESDAY THROUGH TUESDAY NIGHT/...
Tuesday's forecast is quite uncertain at this point, at least in
terms of details. We can say with reasonably good confidence that it
will be another very warm and humid day, especially over the
southern half of the area. Highs on either side of 90 and dew points
in the 70s are forecast, a very soupy combination. We may be close
to Heat Advisory criteria in some areas.

While that much is known, the convective potential will depend
heavily on what happens late Monday and Monday night. The
combination of potential lingering boundaries and possibility of
lingering stabilization renders predictability very low. Overall,
the potential doesn't look as high as on Monday. Synoptic forcing is
little to none, and considerable mid-level height rises, especially
to the east, will be limiting factors. Not to mention lingering
stabilizing effects from the prior day and night. Thinking the best
potential will be to the west. The western areas will be closest to
the next approaching front, are likely to be least affecting by
convection on Monday night, and may benefit from some remnant
outflow boundaries migrating southwestward by then. While PWATs
won't be as high as on Monday, if storm do form then they are likely
to be slow moving and could produce at least locally heavy rain. But
again, the coverage of any convection remains in question.

A warm and muggy overnight with lows mainly in the lower 70s is
expected. As any convection gradually fades out, could certainly see
some fog develop in the moist, stagnant air mass as the night goes
on.

&&

.LONG TERM /WEDNESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...
Overview...

The beat goes on right through the rest of this week and into next
weekend. Troughing remains prevalent over the Great Lakes region
with multiple low centers tracking through southern Canada.
Meanwhile, a Bermuda high pattern continues to dominate the western
Atlantic. So long as this regime holds, the resulting southerly and
southwesterly flow will continue to relentlessly funnel warm,
tropical air up the coast. Not a pattern where our high temperatures
are going to be notably high, "only" in the upper 80s and lower 90s
all through the period. But oppressively high dew points in the 70s
will keep heat index values in the upper 90s to near 100 for several
more days. Occasional to frequent opportunities for showers and
storms will also remain in the forecast. The severe weather
potential looks fairly low through the period, but given the moist
air mass and how much rain we've had recently, additional hydro
concerns are possible.

Dailies...

Wednesday-Wednesday night... One of the low centers mentioned above
will make its closest approach to us, but remains well north up in
Canada. This will send a weak cold front our way by late in the day.
Consequently, Wednesday will likely feature one of the better shower
and storm chances for the week thanks to this added forcing in the
warm and very humid air mass. Went with high chc to low likely PoPs
across most of the region, a little lower towards the coast. The
good news for Wednesday is that the dynamics do not look supportive
of much if any severe weather, and the system may be progressive
enough to limit, though not eliminate, any hydro threat.

Thursday-Thursday night... The front from Wednesday will be offshore
by Thursday. Its effect will not be overly noticeable. A shift to
more westerly winds and a small drop in humidity can be expected,
but it will still be a summerlike day. Highs will again be near 90.
However, with the loss of forcing and slightly drier air mass,
Thursday looks like the best bet for a dry day this week. Still
cannot rule out a shower or storm such as along the sea breeze, but
kept PoPs at slgt chc for Thursday. By overnight, the winds will
already be turning back southwest, bringing another surge of warm
and muggy air with lows again in the 70s.

Friday-Sunday... Timing differences in the guidance increase by the
end of the week and next weekend. Another cold front, this one
probably slower moving than the Wednesday one, is likely to
approach. Once it arrives, it will bring at least another day or two
of better shower and storm chances. Using a consensus of timing,
Saturday looks like the day most likely to feature rain chances. So
have placed the highest PoPs there with lower but still chc range
PoPs on the "shoulder" days of Friday and Sunday. It is possible
that once this front passes we could get into more of a true
continental air mass with noticeably drier air. But until then, a
muggy mix of highs near 90 and dew points in the 70s will continue.

.AVIATION /02Z MONDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...
The following discussion is for KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE, KRDG, KILG,
KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas.

Tonight...Mainly VFR this evening except for ACY/MIV where lower
ceilings have already developed as of 21Z. A few showers or
thunderstorms could lower ceilings and visibilities into the
MVFR range. After midnight MVFR/IFR conditions are expected to
develop across most terminals as ceilings and visibilities drop.
Winds will be from the southeast/south less than 10 kts.
Moderate confidence.

Monday...Mainly VFR with the exception of MVFR restrictions early in
the morning and associated with scattered afternoon thunderstorms.
The thunderstorms are expected to develop across the I-95
terminals and those to the west. Not expecting thunderstorms at
KMIV and KACY. SW winds around 10 kts. Moderate confidence.

Outlook...

Tuesday-Friday... Most of these days are likely to be very similar.
Mainly VFR conditions should dominate the daytimes. However,
afternoon showers and tstms with local restrictions are possible
just about every day. Overnight fog development is also possible
every night, burning off by 12z to 14z. Southerly to southwesterly
winds of 5 to 10 kt are likely during the daytimes, though they may
be more southeast on Tuesday especially north of PHL. Light and
variable or calm winds for the overnights. Confidence in the overall
pattern is moderate to high, but it is too early to know details on
flight categories.

&&

.MARINE...
Sub-Small Craft Advisory conditions continue on the area waters
through Monday night. Seas may start to build a bit in the southerly
flow and we could see near 5 ft, mainly along the outer edges and in
our southern most coastal zones. Winds will be around 10 to 20 knots
out of the south to southwest with a few gusts near 25 knots,
mainly during the afternoon on Monday. Locally higher waves and
winds are possible in showers and thunderstorms.

Outlook...

Tuesday-Friday... Sub-SCA conditions are expected all through the
week. Shower and tstm coverage will be less over the waters than on
land, but a couple of days will still feature a storm chance,
especially late Wednesday. Winds mainly south or southwest at 10 to
15 kt through the period. Seas 2 to 3 ft.

Rip Currents...

There is a low risk for the development of dangerous rip
currents at ocean beaches today, however, the risk may be a
little higher this evening as winds shift to the south and
increase to around 15 kt. With winds increasing to 15-20 kt on
Monday, and seas building, there is a moderate risk for the
development of dangerous rip currents on Monday.
