After a significant heatwave, a cold front approached the mid-Atlantic on July 1, 2021. A potent mid-level trough was also digging southward through southern Ontario and into the Great Lakes region, and a strong upper level jet streak was present downstream the trough axis, over the interior mid-Atlantic and northern New England. This strong upper level forcing combined with the approaching front and a lingering warm, moist air mass ahead of it caused widespread thunderstorm development on July 1. Storms occurred almost exclusively south of Interstate 78, in the environment of best instability. A number of storms became severe, taking the form of mainly linear and multi-cellular clusters but with some embedded supercellular characteristics. Straight line wind damage was the primary hazard, with a number of reports of downed trees and power outages due to winds. With the cold front remaining to the west, some storm activity continued into the overnight, but storm coverage and intensity gradually waned with the loss of daytime heating and the overturning of the atmosphere from earlier storms.

.SYNOPSIS...
A cold front will slowly move through the region today and shift
offshore by Friday. A couple waves of low pressure will likely track
along the front over the weekend as troughing and upper level low
pressure remain in place over the Northeast. High pressure should
start to build into the region by Sunday and will generally dominate
the pattern early next week. Another cold front may approach by mid
next week.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
Unlike the last several days, the main story today will not be
the heat, but rather the potential for severe thunderstorms,
heavy rain, and flash flooding. there will be two main features
we will be watching closely today. First is a mid level trough
which is expected to dig south out of Quebec as it intensifies
and eventually becomes a closed low. Secondly is a surface cold
front which is already tantalizingly close to the region (in
central NY this morning), which will approach our region
eventually arriving and moving through our region tonight. The
combination of these two features, along with the still very
moist air mass in place will lead to widespread showers and
thunderstorms starting later this morning and continuing through
the overnight hours, though the prime period for thunderstorms
and significant impacts looks to be from mid afternoon through
late this evening. As for the hazards:
Heavy rain/flash flooding: As mentioned above, thanks to the
maritime tropical airmass already in place over our region,
precipitable water values remain well above normal (00Z RAOBs from
around the region show values of 1.7 to 1.9 inches). Low level
southerly return flow, especially this afternoon, means that values
could increase by the time we see widespread storms. Additionally by
this afternoon, the cold front should be nearly stalled or at least
very slow moving. At the same time, mid and upper level flow should
be mostly parallel to the orientation of the front. This sets the
stage for training storms. By the time this develops, it appears
that the best lift is along and east of the fall line. Did not make
any changes to the flash flood watch at this time as the threat for
heavy rain is lower west of the current watch, and although heavy
rain is a concern south and east of the watch, flash flood guidance
remains quite high in these areas, limiting the risk for flash
flooding.
Severe Thunderstorms/damaging winds: By the time the mid level jet
develops this afternoon (which will be a key player in increased
effective shear and thus more organized convection in our region),
there could be a very sharp gradient in instability thanks largely
to mid and low level clouds limiting heating and thus low level
lapse rates. Where exactly this gradient will be remains to be seen
as there is some disagreement between models as to where it will set
up. Given the current satellite trends, I agree with the previous
shift and SPC, that the higher instability is likely going to be
confined to areas generally along and south/east of I-95 by the
time the jet develops. This reflects SPC's 9 AM update which
shifted the Slight Risk area farther north to include the I-95
corridor. It does appear that the primary threat is damaging
winds as even in areas that manage to stay clear for much of the
day, mid level lapse rates and instability in the hail growth
region will be limited, thus limiting the risk for large hail.
Low level flow is expected to be very weak and the LCL should be
relatively high, limiting the risk for tornadoes. A Severe
Thunderstorm Watch has been issued until 8 PM for the Philly
metro area and all other counties along and south/east of I-95.
Heat: Although the air mass has not changed yet (and won't until at
least tonight), temperatures should be somewhat limited thanks to
increasing cloud cover through the day. Areas that will stay clear
the longest (mostly Delmarva and SE NJ) will get into the upper 80s
and could even reach 90 before the storms arrive. With the humid
air, heat index values above 90 are possible along and east of the
95 corridor. Still, that is a bit better than the upper 90s air
temperatures and heat index values above 100 that many locations saw
yesterday. Thus, no heat advisories or excessive heat warnings are
in effect.

.SHORT TERM /FRIDAY THROUGH SATURDAY NIGHT/...
The main story of Friday and Saturday will be upper level low
pressure tracking overhead of the region. By Friday morning, the
cold frontal boundary which is expected to bring heavy rain on
Thursday should be moving offshore. Trends overall have been more
progressive with this front. This is good news in terms of bringing
an end to steady rain heading into the holiday weekend. However, the
overall setup is still a somewhat unsettled one. Initially, a wave
of low pressure forming along the offshore boundary may allow steady
rain to continue over eastern areas on Friday morning. That area of
rain should push offshore by Friday afternoon, and there's a good
chance it won't even take that long. From there, the upper low will
become the forcing mechanism for any rainfall. Several shortwave
impulses will likely rotate through the broadly cyclonic flow aloft
on Friday and Saturday. Combined with steep lapse rates, additional
shower and thunderstorm development is possible on both days. This
should be mostly diurnally driven activity with the afternoon and
evening hours favored for any convection.
Presently, my thinking is that Friday will be the drier day overall.
Once any morning rain moves offshore, it looks like the best lift
from the upper level disturbance(s) will stay mainly north and west
of the area. Certainly cannot rule out a scattered shower or storm,
especially to the north and west, but there will likely be a lot of
dry hours on Friday and it would not be surprising if much of the
area sees no rain at all. With the lower heights building in aloft
and a fair amount of cloud cover, temperatures will run below
normal, struggling to reach 80.
Saturday looks like the more unsettled day, though by no means a
washout, as the core of the upper low moves overhead along with a
shortwave or two rotating through. I think this added forcing will
bring a better chance for scattered showers and storms to develop.
This despite Saturday also likely being the coolest day of the
stretch, with highs mainly in the low 70s north to upper 70s south.
But the steeper lapse rates and better forcing should compensate for
this. Activity should diminish fairly early on Saturday night with
the loss of daytime heating and as the upper low starts to shift
east. Many areas outside the urban corridor will drop into the upper
50s on Saturday night, on the cool side for the season.

.LONG TERM /SUNDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
Overview...
Warming temperatures will be the story of the long term as upper
level low pressure departs and a more typical summerlike pattern
sets up over the East. Trends are very positive overall for the
Independence Day holiday, with the rain risk looking minimal and the
warming trend getting underway. This trend will become more
pronounced by Monday as a Bermuda high pattern develops, but it does
not look like next week will be as hot as the recent weather
pattern. By the middle of next week, it is possible we will be
keeping an eye on what becomes of Tropical Depression 5 over the
Atlantic, but it is much too soon to say if that system will have
any impacts on the local area.
Dailies...
Independence Day... Upper level low pressure will be shifting
offshore by the time we get to Sunday. This will bring improving
weather for the holiday. Upper level heights remain below normal, so
temperatures will still run cooler than average, but should recover
into the upper 70s and low 80s in most areas. More notably, the rain
risk drops even further as the air mass dries out and forcing for
ascent is lost. Still cannot rule out a pop-up shower due to
lingering steep lapse rates, but coverage should be limited at most.
Overall, despite the temperatures a little below average, it should
be a very nice day and all indications are positive for outdoor
holiday events. A dry and rather cool night is expected with lows
dropping into the upper 50s and low 60s.
Monday-Wednesday... A more zonal flow pattern develops over the East
with Bermuda high pressure offshore. This will bring a return of
warmer and more humid weather to the area as southwesterly return
flow develops. This setup does not look as excessively hot as what
the region has been dealing with recently. Currently the forecast is
for more typical summer fare, with highs in the upper 80s and low
90s on all three of these days. Mainly dry weather for this stretch
as well with little forcing over the area. An isolated storm is
possible on Monday and Tuesday, mainly over far northwestern parts
of the area. By Wednesday, a cold front may approach and bring a
better chance for scattered showers and storms. Should any moisture
from Tropical Depression 5 affect the region, its earliest potential
arrival would likely be towards Wednesday or Thursday, but we will
have plenty of time to watch that.

.AVIATION /18Z THURSDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
The following discussion is for KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE, KRDG, KILG,
KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas.
Today...MVFR ceilings are expected to move in from the west
through 18Z as showers and thunderstorms approach the region.
Once the rain begins, thunderstorms will be possible for much of
the day, but for now have only included a TEMPO group in each
TAF for the most likely period of thunderstorms. Have also added
VCTS to ILG and PHL as the convection moving into the area from
Maryland has a history of producing some occasional lightning.
Ceilings should continue to lower through the afternoon, and a
few sites may see IFR ceilings develop by late afternoon. Mostly
westerly and northwesterly winds at 5 to 10 knots. Moderate
confidence on the overall pattern, but low confidence on timing
details.
Tonight...Ceilings may lower to IFR through the evening across much
of the region. Showers should generally move east of the TAF sites
after 06Z. Areas of fog will be possible, especially for any
locations that receive heavy rain today. Winds will be light
and variable but direction should favor southwesterly. Low
confidence.
Outlook...
Friday-Friday night... MVFR/IFR conditions still appear likely to
start the day on Friday, especially east of PHL. Latest indications
are that VFR conditions will likely be prevailing for much of the
later morning, afternoon, and evening. However, areas of sub-VFR
remain possible through the day and night due to scattered showers
and thunderstorms. Westerly winds around 5 kt becoming light and
variable overnight. Low confidence.
Saturday-Saturday night... Varying flight conditions are likely. VFR
may be prevailing, but scattered showers and thunderstorms will
likely bring periods of restrictions especially near and northeast
of PHL. North to northwest winds 5 to 10 kt, becoming light and
variable overnight. Low confidence.
Sunday-Sunday night... Mainly VFR. West-northwest winds around 5 kt
becoming light and variable overnight. Moderate confidence.
Monday-Monday night... Mainly VFR. Winds shifting from west to
southwest at 5 to 10 kt. Moderate confidence.

For most of the area waters, seas and winds should stay below Small
Craft Advisory conditions through tonight. However, locally higher
seas and winds will be possible in the vicinity of any thunderstorms
especially this afternoon and evening.
For the Atlantic coastal waters from Cape May NJ to Fenwick Island
DE...A period of wind gusts above 25 kt is likely this afternoon.
Therefore, an SCA has been issued from 2 PM to 8 PM EDT.
Outlook...
Friday-Monday... No marine headlines are currently anticipated.
Winds will vary in direction but will generally maintain an offshore
component, with gusts mostly 20 kt or less. Seas mostly 3 to 4 ft,

South to southwest winds continue into Friday. There should be a
short to medium period southerly swell both days. The more favorably
