A strong shortwave trough and associated cold front moved through the mid-Atlantic on November 13. This was a very compact but unusually potent disturbance which was preceded by a broken line of showers and thunderstorms. Strong wind fields and lift helped to generate convection, with a considerable amount of lightning observed especially given the time of year. Storms peaked in intensity further northeast, near Long Island and southern New England where a significant severe weather event occurred. Over New Jersey, the main impact was hail, which was mostly sub-severe but locally reached severe criteria. A period of strong non-thunderstorm winds then overspread the region as the cold front moved through.

A strong cold front will move through the Northeast today. A clipper
system will progress from the lower Great Lakes on Sunday to New
England on Monday. High pressure will build into the eastern U.S.
Monday night through Wednesday. Another strong cold front will
translate eastward through the eastern U.S. on Thursday.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
...Showers and thunderstorms with strong to damaging winds
early this afternoon will be followed by a period of windy
conditions during the remainder of the day...
Update for the severe thunderstorm watch over portions of
central and northern NJ. Otherwise, no significant changes.
A remarkably strong shortwave trough axis associated with the broad
closed upper low across southeastern Canada will race quickly from
near Virginia as of mid morning through our region early this
afternoon. At the surface, a strong cold front will race across
the area early this afternoon then surface high pressure will
ridge in from the south and west in its wake overnight.
The front is just approaching just to our west as of mid
morning with warm air advection ahead of it. However this air
isn't particularly warm or moist. It's essentially just
recycled and slightly modified post-frontal air from the Friday
system and will result in highs around 50 degrees in the
northwest and in the low 60s across the coastal plain. The mid-
level jet maxima will be located just offshore with much of the
northern half of the forecast area in the left exit region of
it. This combined with the sharp and considerable height falls
(~12 dam in 6 hours or less) across the area from the shortwave
will yield increasing cloud cover and forcing for convection.
We're growing increasingly concerned about the potential for severe
convection during the early afternoon. Much of the guidance
suggesting MLCAPE values in the 300-500 J/kg range and steep lapse
rates 7-8 C/km developing across the coastal plain and into northern
New Jersey. BUFKIT profiles also indicate a strong LLJ (35-45 kts)
developing immediately in front of and behind the front (sharp
pressure rise and CAA), which any robust convection will aid in
mixing down to the surface. It appears the consensus in the CAMs is
that convection will fire up in eastern NJ (east of Trenton) and
move east toward Long Island, Hudson Valley, then southern New
England eventually. Given the high shear (effective deep layer
around 50 kts), low CAPE environment, we anticipate that any
stronger cells that develop to be accompanied by wind gusts of
40-50 mph with some isolated stronger gusts up to 60 mph. The
steep lapse rates and cold mid-levels will likely lead to some
small hail, but we also wouldn't be surprised to see some hail
up to quarter sized in a stronger cell. The strong to severe
showers and thunderstorms should be confined to New Jersey from
around northern Ocean County northward. The lack of any deep
moisture return will result in a lack of any appreciable
rainfall (PWats only around 0.5-0.7"), but totals up to 0.25"
may be possible north of Philly.
The front will pass quickly through the area during the early
afternoon resulting in a sharp temperature drop and sharp increase
in wind speed as surface pressure rises quickly. BUFKIT profiles
suggest west to northwesterly winds will gust in the 30-40 mph range
across much of the area behind the front, with gusts around 45 mph
near the coast. Thus, a Wind Advisory has been issued where the
strongest post-frontal winds are expected. Temperatures will fall
rapidly into the 30s tonight and skies will quickly become clear as
high pressure builds into the Deep South and ridges into the area. A
few snow showers are possible across the southern Poconos this
evening, but no accumulation is expected. Some patchy frost is
possible and a Frost Advisory may need to be considered for Sussex
County, DE where the growing season continues through Monday.

.SHORT TERM /SUNDAY THROUGH MONDAY NIGHT/...
Main forecast issue for the short term is the effects of a clipper
system moving through the region Sunday night and Monday.
Transient midlevel ridging will traverse the northern Mid-Atlantic
on Sunday, with low-level cold advection transitioning to warm
advection by Sunday evening. Cloud cover will be increasing and
lowering during the day as large-scale lift increases in advance of
a potent vort max moving through the Midwest and Ohio Valley.
Conditions should be dry across the CWA during the day, but the
residual effects of antecedent cold advection and increasing cloud
cover will result in cold max temps, probably around 6-11 degrees
lower than seasonal averages.
By Sunday night, precipitation will move into the Northeast, with
thermal profiles favorable for some snow in the southern Poconos and
even a mix in portions of northwest New Jersey. Surface temperatures
will be near or slightly below freezing in the Poconos, but likely
not overly favorable for meaningful accumulations. A few tenths of
an inch are possible in the higher terrain (perhaps even locally an
inch or so). Nevertheless, this event should serve as a reminder
that winter is quickly approaching. For the rest of the region,
scattered showers are expected during the overnight hours, with PoPs
lowering to slight chances in Delmarva. Though guidance is primarily
dry for Monday, with the passage of the trough axis during the day,
would not be surprised to see some isolated/brief showers in
northern portions of the CWA. Not much mention of this yet in the
forecast (besides in the Poconos), but I suspect we will need to
expand PoPs southeastward during the next few forecast cycles.
Winds will become westerly and increase after the attendant cold
front associated with the clipper system moves through the region.
Expect another chilly/raw day, with highs several degrees below
seasonal averages. Monday night will be quite chilly across the
area, but temperatures will likely not tank since winds will
probably remain somewhat elevated in the cold-advection regime.
Forecast lows are in the mid/upper 20s in the southern Poconos to
the mid 30s in the urban corridor.

.LONG TERM /TUESDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...
A longer period of midlevel ridging will occur in the eastern U.S.
Tuesday and Wednesday, as the early-week clipper system moves into
the western Atlantic. A surface ridge will nose northward from the
southeast U.S., with its axis crossing the region Tuesday afternoon.
Another chilly day is expected, but conditions should be dry, with
light winds. Some return flow will become established Tuesday night,
so temperatures may end up slightly warmer than Monday night, though
this will be dependent on the timing of the aforementioned surface
ridge. Just a little bit slower, and temperatures may plummet during
the evening.
The next system will be lifting northeastward into Ontario on
Wednesday, with an associated cold front bulging eastward through
the Great Lakes southwestward into the Mid-South on Wednesday night.
A shortwave trough will pivot southeastward into the Midwest on
Thursday, forcing the front through the eastern U.S. Thursday and
Thursday night. Scattered showers should be present along the front,
though as the front approaches downstream ridging and becomes
displaced from the stronger ascent via the larger-scale trough,
there has been a tendency in the deterministic simulations to weaken
precipitation and lower QPF by the time the front reaches our
region. However, the 00z ECMWF provides an alternative scenario
thanks to the aforementioned shortwave trough on the southern side
of the larger-scale vortex. As this lifts east-northeast, strong
lift coincides with the front's passage along the Eastern Seaboard,
leading to a resurgence of precipitation as the front reaches the
coast. Will need to assess model trends the next few days to
determine what solution bears out. For now, left the forecast
similar to what was inherited (slight-chance to chance PoPs Thursday
and Thursday night), with warming temperatures Wednesday and
Thursday followed by another sharp cooldown in the post-frontal
environment on Friday.
The southern stream appears to become more active just beyond the
medium range, suggesting a stormier pattern may occur the following
week.

.AVIATION /18Z SATURDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
The following discussion is for KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE, KRDG, KILG,
KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas.
Today...VFR conditions should prevail for most sites, however
ceilings will increase in coverage and lower through around 18Z.
Some lingering patchy and transient fog is possible for an hour
or so after sunrise. Showers will develop near and north/west
of I-95 after 15Z and will be associated with locally MVFR
ceilings and visibilities. Thunder is possible, but coverage is
expected to remain limited enough to preclude a TAF mention.
Winds will start south to southeasterly around 5-10 kts, then
will shift gradually southwest to west and increase to around
10-15 kts with higher gusts. A cold front will result in a sharp
increase in winds from the west to northwest around 18Z (give
or take an hour) around 15-20 kts with gusts around 30-35 kts.
Winds should begin decreasing toward 00Z and ceilings will
clear. Moderate confidence overall.
Tonight...VFR/SKC. Westerly winds around 10 kts with some higher
gusts possible early will gradually decrease to around 5 kts
overnight and become a bit more south of west. High confidence.
Outlook...

the ocean waters with seas around 5 feet and southeasterly winds

front between noon and 2 PM from the west to northwest around
25-30 kts. Gusts of 30-35 kts are expected across Delaware Bay
and offshore of Delaware. Gusts up to 40 kts are expected off
the New Jersey coast. A brief period of stronger gusts are
possible as the front moves offshore. Seas around 4-7 feet will
gradually decrease overnight.
