Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Elko NV 810 PM PDT Mon Sep 27 2021 .SYNOPSIS...Winds continue to subside into the late evening hours, with showers expected to move into Humboldt County late this evening and overnight, which will expand east into northern Elko County early Tuesday. Cooler temperatures on Tuesday with showers ending across northern NV by the afternoon. && .UPDATE...Clouds are spreading into Humboldt County this evening as a cold front approaches from the northwest. RHs are rising with the incoming system, and winds are subsiding. As such, the Red Flag Warning which was in effect across portions of Humboldt County has been allowed to expire at 8PM. No changes were made to the forecast at this time. && .PREV DISCUSSION... /ISSUED AT 256 PM / SYNOPSIS...Dry and windy conditions expected ahead of the cold front this afternoon and evening, with the front expected to pass later tonight. Behind the front, look for colder temperatures and showers mostly north of I-80. Drier conditions expected for the rest of the week with a slow warm-up occurring into the weekend. SHORT TERM...Today through Wednesday. Dry and warm condition still prevail for this afternoon, but are not expected to last much longer with model seeing a cold front pushing into the region later tonight. Ahead of the front, afternoon and evening winds look to pick up across northern Nevada with northern Humboldt county seeing the strongest of the winds thanks in part to a low level jet near the area. For this location, a combination of those winds and dry conditions will create enough concern for a Red Flag Waring until 8 pm tonight. Alongside the fire weather concerns, the breezy to gusty conditions today will also see blowing dust across the region alongside a return of haze and smoke from surrounding wildfires. Once the region gets behind the front in the late evening to overnight hours of today, cooler and wetter conditions will look to settle as models see good northwesterly flow settle in. Look for rain showers mostly north of the I-80 corridor throughout the overnight with potential for a little rain/snow mix up at the higher elevations. Amounts are mostly expected to be light with latest guidance keeping values of 0.10 inches or great constrained to the the northern border or high elevations. By Tuesday afternoon, model agreement sees the trough move out of the region leaving only some lingering showers around Great Basin National Park for the overnight. Conditions look to dry out Wednesday as models see a ridge build in behind the trough and keep northerly flow settled over the region for the day. Afternoon temperatures today will stay warm with locations hanging around the 70s and 80s. However, look for temperatures to plummet Tuesday and Wednesday thanks to the cold frontal passage. Afternoon temperatures for both days look to sink into the high 50s to low 60s, with overnights dropping into the 30s. Look for Tuesday night to be one of the coldest nights of the week with a majority of Elko county below freezing by Wednesday morning. LONG TERM...Wednesday night through next Monday. Excellent agreement in the ensemble suites that show low spread through the extended period. Confidence is high that quiet weather prevails through this period. High pressure over the intermountain region blocks any significant intrusion of moisture. Expect plenty of sunshine that allows for a gradual warming trend, but levels off this weekend. Not much wind given the light gradient flow. AVIATION...Gusts to 25kts at KWMC through 06Z as a cold front sweeps across northern Nevada. Less windy at KBAM, KEKO, KTPH, and KELY. Winds will gradually shift from southwest to northwest late tonight and Tuesday morning. A combination of smoke and haze may limit visibility to 5SM-6SM at KEKO, KTPH, and KELY. The air mass behind the cold front will be free from smoke and haze. FIRE WEATHER...Dry and windy conditions are expected to be seen in the northerly zones this afternoon ahead of a cold frontal passage later in the night. While zones 438, 469 and 470 are expected to be below the criteria, occasional gust around or above 30 mph could briefly occur at the higher elevation. As for zone 437, winds are still expected to be at there strongest for the zone with good upper-level support present to hit the criteria. A Red Flag warning is in effect for this zone until 8 pm tonight. Behind the front, winds will still persist, but RH values will be on the rise for all zones. Showers are expected in the northern zones through the overnight and into Tuesday morning. By that afternoon the front and trough will begin there exit of the region leaving only some linger showers in the southern portion of zone 425 for Wednesday morning.
