Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Elko NV 229 AM PDT Thu Nov 4 2021 .SYNOPSIS...An upper-level disturbance will bring increased winds from the west-southwest to much of northern Nevada today along with a slight chance for light showers north of I-80. Another system arrives over the weekend and once again providing northwestern Nevada with a few rain and mountain snow showers although significant precipitation is not expected. Active weather may persist into early next week but confidence in this scenario is not high. && .SHORT TERM...Today through Saturday. An upper-level short wave will pass through the region today brining gusty west-southwest winds to portions of northwestern and northern Nevada this afternoon. A few showers are possible but rainfall will be limited in amount and confined primarily to locations north of I-80. Friday will be quieter and dry before the next trough begins to affect the area Saturday when a stronger cold front arrives. Gradual 500 dm height falls will promote a slow cooling trend especially across northern Nevada. High temperatures in the mid and upper 60s today will cool into the upper 50s to lower 60s across northern Nevada by Saturday. Stronger winds in the 15-20 mph range with gusts approaching 30 mph are expected across Humboldt county north central Nevada this afternoon as the short wave disturbance moves through the area. Lighter winds are expected Friday before another increase Saturday. .LONG TERM...Saturday night through next Thursday. A broad and persistent trough looks to be in place off the west coast for the first half of the extended period. This will keep SW flow over the CWA into next week. Any showers lingering Saturday night in Elko County should trend dry by morning with some light mountain snow potentially persisting into Sunday. There is low confidence in the exact timing, but it is expected that a shortwave will move across the state in the Monday time frame and produce opportunity for isolated to scattered rain and mountain snow showers as early as Sunday afternoon. Snow levels currently look to lower to valley levels Sunday night, but any accumulations are to be quite light. With a fairly significant temperature gradient situated over the region from NW to SE due to the position of the trough, low temps are to range from mid 20s toward the NW to near 40 toward the SE Saturday and Sunday nights. High temps Sunday and Monday look to range from mid 40s toward the NW to low 60s toward the SE. It is possible that shower activity never fully comes to an end Monday before the main trough begins moving onshore with the trough axis positioned over Nevada in the Tuesday time frame. There looks to be slightly more moisture available with this system and greater chance for showers thru Wednesday. Snow levels look to be higher initially with rain and mountain snow. However, it is again expected that snow levels will lower to valley levels overnight. Accumulations currently look to be quite light. SW winds are to be breezy Tuesday as well. There is good agreement among guidance that ridging will begin building in for Thursday with fairer weather conditions anticipated. Temperatures are forecast to be slightly cooler than average midweek. && .AVIATION...VFR conditions continue at all terminals through Friday. A weak system clips far northern NV today which will bring some higher clouds to the region.
