.SYNOPSIS...
A fast moving weather system will bring gusty winds today as well as
chances for light showers, mainly in northeast California and far
northwest Nevada. Another system will bring breezes and chances for
rain and mountain snow showers, mainly in northeast California and
the Sierra Saturday afternoon and evening. The weather pattern looks
active next week with an increased probability for a wetter storm
early next week.

.SHORT TERM...
Main updates this morning in the short term:
* Wind Advisory issued for today for NE California & far NW Nevada.
* Precipitation chances increased Saturday, with an inch or two of
snowfall possible along Sierra passes.
An offshore low will work its way inland this morning with a band of
light rainfall currently tracking over northern California. These
showers will weaken through the morning with most of the light rain
remaining across the west slopes of the Sierra and right along the
Tahoe Basin crest where a few tenths of an inch of precipitation
is possible this morning. Zero to trace amounts of rainfall are
expected across western Nevada and down through the Sierra in Mono
county. Snow levels will be above 9,000' this morning when the
showers arrive so travel impacts are unlikely across the passes.
Gusty winds will also accompany this low with stronger winds this
morning across E.Sierra, E.Plumas, Lassen, and far northern Washoe
counties. The strongest winds across these areas are expected from
about sunrise to early afternoon.
Gusts of 40-50 mph are possible with up to 60 mph for wind prone
sections of US-395 particularly from just south of Susanville to
near Doyle. As such, have issued Wind Advisories through this
afternoon for these locations. Cross winds hazards are expected
particularly for high profile vehicles. Outside of the advisory
area, gusts today will be in the 30-40 mph range along the Sierra
Front down to near Highway 50. Lesser speeds of 20-35 mph are
possible elsewhere. Ridgetop gusts will be 80-100 mph.
Lighter winds prevail Friday but ridgetop winds will remain gusty
with peak gusts around 70 mph still possible through Saturday
afternoon as the next weak shortwave through arrives. This wave will
also provide a period of rain and mountain snow showers across NE
California and the Sierra Saturday afternoon and evening. Snow
levels will be around 6,500'-7,000' during this period so a couple
of inches of snow accumulation is not out of the question Saturday
evening on the passes. Travel slow downs along with wet and slick
roads are possible. Be sure to keep tabs on the forecast if you have

.LONG TERM...Sunday onward...
The first half of next week continues to look unsettled with periods
of gusty winds and valley rain / mountain snow possible starting
Sunday night. The best chances for moderate-to-heavy precipitation
rates are west of Highway 395 from Monday evening through Tuesday
morning. East of Highway 395 precipitation rates may be much
lighter. Snow levels could be around 6000-7000 feet through Monday
night before rising around 1,000 feet Tuesday - so mountain
passes west of Highway 395 are likely to see winter driving
conditions at times.
With extensive cloud cover and a West Coast trough we expect cooler
temperatures Sunday through Tuesday, with highs in the 50s for
western NV and in the 40s for most Sierra communities. The timing is
uncertain especially for Wednesday, but a West Coast ridge could
bring a warming and drying trend for the second half of next week,
with highs Thursday-Friday into the 60s for western NV and into the
50s for the Sierra. JCM

.AVIATION...
A low-pressure system will continue to create gusty winds this
morning into this afternoon, along with precipitation chances
mainly near the Sierra crest. Wind gusts today will peak in the
25-40 kt range in valleys and 40-50 kts at wind prone locations.
Very strong ridgeline gusts, low-level wind shear and moderate
turbulence east of the Sierra crest can also be expected today.
Mountain obscuration in the high Sierra is also likely, with
periods of reduced visibility in rain and high elevation (8000+
feet) snow. The most likely terminals with obscurations will be
KTRK and KTVL. With the storm falling apart as it moves east,
there are lesser chances for KRNO/KCXP/KMEV/KMMH with sprinkles
and/or nearby virga possible. JCM
