Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Elko NV 253 AM PST Sat Mar 6 2021 .SYNOPSIS...A Pacific weather system will bring gusty winds to the state today only a few light rain and snow showers to parts of northwestern and north-central Nevada. Colder temperatures, gusty winds and a few rain and snow showers return late Monday into Tuesday to the region. Showers will linger across central Nevada Tuesday and Wednesday but significant precipitation is not expected. && .SHORT TERM...Today through Monday. An appreciable mid-level short wave as evidenced on GOES imagery is expected to move through the state today. Fairly strong winds aloft with 700 mb flow of 40 to 50 kts will yield some gusty winds across the state today but should be limited to about 35 mph in most cases as strongest flow aloft moves east into Utah throughout today. Winds diminish tonight with lighter winds on Sunday. Some light rain/snow showers are expected across portions of Humboldt county and northern Elko county but this should have limited if any impact on travel. Sunday will continue to be mild with temperatures reaching into the 50s and 60s again after lows Sunday morning in the 20s. A broader trough with attendant cold front arrives late Monday in Tuesday bringing considerably cooler temperatures to the state and additional chances for rain and snow. .LONG TERM...Monday night through next Friday. A cold front will continue to move through the state Monday night and Tuesday. Multiple deterministic models hint at the front taking its time as it moves through parts of east central Nevada on Tuesday. Snow shower activity would be most likely in the mountains of White Pine county. Euro ensembles continue to show a large spread in high temperatures for Tuesday, with the average being closer to what the NBM has, whereas yesterday the ensembles had more of a colder solution for Tuesday. As the front continues to move through Tuesday a low off the California coast will continue to dig south and east. This may produce a resurgence of moisture in central and southern Nevada on Wednesday. Winds currently look breezy Thursday and Friday. Near average high temperatures are expected, with highs in the 40s to lower 50s Lows currently are expected in the 20s, with valleys and sheltered locations seeing lows in the teens. && .AVIATION...An approaching Pacific weather system will increase winds this morning into Saturday evening around the Great Basin. The strongest winds will be in KWMC, KBAM, and KEKO...lesser winds in KELY and KTPH. Winds will be from the southwest around 15-20 knots with gusts 25-30 knots. Skies mostly clear, with some mid-level decks forming mid-day and dispersing during the evening.
