Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Las Vegas NV 919 PM PDT Mon Apr 5 2021 .SYNOPSIS...Unseasonably hot weather will continue across much of the region today along with the addition of gusty west winds as a low pressure system passes over northern Nevada. North winds will push through our region tonight followed by temperatures dropping around 10 degrees on Tuesday. A dry and warm weather pattern with afternoon breezes will set up the rest of the week with temperatures running 5 to 10 degrees above normal. && .UPDATE...Gusty southwest and west winds have mostly decreased below 30-40 mph this evening, with only a few mostly isolated spots still gusting across San Bernardino County. As such, let the Red Flag Warning expire on time this evening. Will also cancel the Owens Valley Wind Advisory early, leaving only the Wind Advisory in San Bernardino which looks good to expire on time at 11pm PDT. Besides that, the previous forecast is on track and no edits were necessary tonight. Breezy northwest winds are expected this evening as a surface cold front makes its way through southern NV and through the rest of the CWA overnight. Per usual, some breezy north winds will linger down the Colorado River Valley tomorrow behind the frontal passage, with the strongest winds mainly isolated to the Laughlin/Bullhead City area and it doesn't look like any headlines are necessary. && .AVIATION...For McCarran...A cold front was moving through the Las Vegas Valley at 04Z, turning winds to the northwest. The most likely scenario is for a short period of gusty northwest winds at the terminal, followed by lighter northwest winds overnight, turning more northeast during the day Tuesday. However, it is also possible that surface winds could come back around to the southwest overnight while winds just above the surface stay out of the northwest, which would lead to low level wind shear concerns. Low impact weather is expected from Wednesday through the end of the week. For the rest of southern Nevada, northwest Arizona and southeast California...A cold front was moving through the northern Mojave Desert at 04Z, and winds will shift to northerly behind it as it crosses the desert overnight. The strong west to southwest winds which affected much of the desert Monday will end as the cold front passes, and the Colorado River Valley will be the only area to see north winds gusting 20 to 30 knots Tuesday. Low impact weather is expected from Wednesday through the end of the week. && .PREV DISCUSSION... /issued at 420 PM PDT Mon Apr 5 2021/ .DISCUSSION...through Monday. Low pressure skirting across the northern Great Basin has allowed for winds to increase over much of the area today. Strongest winds have been located over the western Mojave Desert where many areas have already seen winds gusts over 40 mph. These strong winds will continue into this evening before diminishing. Elsewhere, winds have not been as strong, but gusts between 30-40 mph will be fairly common through this afternoon. By tonight, the low will be centered over northern Utah and southern Wyoming as high pressure starts to build over the eastern Pacific. We will see a weak cold front push through the area tonight which will bring somewhat cooler temperatures Tuesday as high pressure starts to build over the region. There will still be enough of a surface gradient to bring some gusty winds down the Colorado River Valley Tuesday morning, but overall winds will remain under advisory criteria and should decrease by early afternoon. High temps will remain a few degrees above normal, but are expected to be about 8 degrees cooler than Monday. There will be a couple of weak systems that push through the region during the remainder of the week, but this will have little impact on our weather other than some occasional gusty winds over the Mohave Desert.
