A wave of low pressure passed through the area on the 7th of January. There was plenty of cold air ahead of this system for precipitation to fall as a period of snow. Snow accumulation ranged from one to three inches in the Virginia Piedmont into the Washington Metropolitan area, to three to five inches near and west of the Blue Ridge Mountains.
