Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Elko NV 212 PM PST Tue Nov 17 2020 .SYNOPSIS...Cold front moves across Nevada late tonight and Wednesday, bringing some rain to northern Nevada with the snow level near 7000 feet. A cooling trend is expected with near normal temperatures by the end of the week. && .SHORT TERM...Tonight through Friday. Southwest gradient flow has strengthened ahead of a Pacific trough. Combined with a deepening surface low and well mixed air mass, gusty winds reaching as high as 50 mph will occur across Humboldt County and central Nevada to White Pine County. Wind Advisory has been issued until early evening, except for White Pine County where it lasts through Wednesday afternoon. Baroclinic band slowly pushing eastward over northern California will be over northwest Nevada later tonight, leading to precipitation across this region, including Winnemucca. Shear axis lifts northward Wednesday morning toward the Idaho border; the best chance of rain/snow will be over the northern Elko County. The Santa Rosa mountains should receive a respectable amount and around a quarter inch /0.25/, with local valley spots toward Sheldon could observe a tenth /0.10/. Lesser amounts are expected for Elko County, primarily toward Wildhorse area and Owyhee, although a brief shower may reach the I80 corridor west of the Pequop Summit. Snow levels lower to around 7000 feet. Westerly flow prevails into Friday, but with a cooling trend that return temperatures much closer to normal. Some light orographic rain or snow persist over the northern mountains into Thursday. Surface front sags into White Pine by Friday, but much of moisture will be gone. .LONG TERM...Friday night through next Tuesday. Progressive flow prevails in the long term period, but appears any weather systems will be splitting once they reach the West Coast. There should be a trough passage Sunday night or Monday morning time frame, but lacks a strong jet. Better confidence that some light snow is possible across the northern mountains, but less certainty across US50 and US6. With respect to temperatures, near seasonal values with daytime values mostly 40s. && .AVIATION... Gusty winds for all TAF sites through 02Z. The strongest gusts occur at KELY with wind near G40KT through tonight, but not as gusty by Wednesday afternoon. KWMC, some rain is expected late tonight after 08Z but ending between 15Z-18Z. VFR should prevail at KWMC, but local MVFR cigs may occur in the vicinity of KWMC. && .LKN WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES...
