Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Hanford CA 313 AM PDT Fri Jul 24 2020 .SYNOPSIS... Isolated afternoon thunderstorms are possible over the Sierra Nevada, mainly north of Tulare County through the weekend. Modest warming trend into the weekend as triple digit heat returns Sunday to the San Joaquin Valley and continues through midweek next week. && .DISCUSSION... An upper level trough of low pressure over the rejoin has brought us below normal temperatures for the past several days across most of the CENCAL interior. The trough is expected to drift just offshore by Sunday and weaken, which will allow temperatures to slowly creep up the next few days. Afternoon and evening thunderstorms are possible across the high Sierra through Monday evening, mainly across the Yosemite Park area. Four Corners upper level ridge of high pressure will build west into the rejoin on Tuesday. An upper level trough of low pressure will approach the coast on Wednesday with an increase in onshore flow and slightly cooler temperatures across the Central San Joaquin Valley, especially across Merced county. Gusty winds along the west side of the SJV is also possible as the trough tries to move inland Tuesday. We will be in between the Four Corners ridge and the trough along the coast which is dry SW flow for the Sierra. We are expecting the thunderstorm activity to diminish starting Tuesday and continue dry through the week. A weak marine air intrusion is possible Wednesday and Thursday with noticeably cooler temperatures mainly north of Kern county. The trough will weaken and the upper level ridge will build back west into the rejoin by Friday with temperatures slowly rising again to near the century mark in the SJV. && .AVIATION...Isolated thunderstorms can be expected along the Sierra crest 18z today through 03z Saturday. Otherwise, VFR conditions will prevail over the central California interior during the next 24 hours. && .AIR QUALITY ISSUES... On Friday July 24 2020... The Blue Jay fire began on the afternoon of July 24th due to a lightning strike near the White Wolf Campground. The fire burned in generally wilderness, though did close several trails within the park.
