Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Flagstaff AZ 830 PM MST Thu Jun 4 2020 .SYNOPSIS...Expect fair weather tonight across northern Arizona. On Friday, gusty winds will develop and chances for showers and thunderstorms increase through Friday night as a weak low pressure system crosses Arizona. Dry weather returns for all by Saturday afternoon, though temperatures will be much cooler this weekend. Very strong southwest winds are likely Sunday afternoon ahead of a dry cold front that should cross into the area Monday morning. && .UPDATE...A warm and dry day was observed across the area. Winslow set a new record high for the date, of 101F. Scattered high clouds are on the increase from the southwest and will gradually spread northward overnight. Made minor cloud cover and temperature adjustments with no major updates needed this evening. && .PREV DISCUSSION /236 PM MST/... A warm afternoon is underway across northern Arizona, satellite imagery shows some fair weather cumulus across the high country. Fair weather is on tap tonight, with Friday morning lows very near this mornings. The models are in good agreement showing the low currently still west of Baja to head eastward Friday and move across northern Arizona Friday night. Friday - Friday night. The main concern is for gusty southerly winds to develop Friday afternoon. The fastest gusts (30-40 mph) are forecast across western Yavapai and Coconino counties, and a Red Flag Warning is in effect for this area. Mid level moisture is on the increase as well and we will maintain the slight chance of an afternoon shower or tstorm. Precipitation coverage should increase Friday night for areas north of a line from Fredonia through White River as the weakening Baja low moves across northern Arizona. The Four Corners area could see 0.20 to 0.40 inches of rainfall from this system. Saturday - a slight chance of showers will continue Saturday morning near the Four Corners with the departing low. Otherwise expect dry weather this weekend. Temps will be on a cooling trend. Gusty winds to persist across Navajo and Apache counties. Sunday - A second and very much stronger low pressure trough will move through the Great Basin on Sunday. Northern Arizona can expect gusty southwest winds in the 30-50 mph range Sunday afternoon, especially for the Kaibab Plateau and areas north of the Mogollon Rim. We are monitoring this aspect of the forecast as wind advisories may be needed. These winds are due to the approach of a dry cold front. Monday - The cold front should be entering northern Arizona early Monday morning. Mondays high temps are forecast to be from 5 to 10 degrees below normal, and the coolest of the next 7 days. Very dry air behind the front could bring morning lows that are near freezing Monday and Tuesday mornings to the high country. From Tuesday through Thursday - Dry weather for this period, temps are on a slow warming trend. && .AVIATION...For the 06Z package...Look for VFR conditions to prevail over most locations the next 24 hours. Light winds through the night becoming southwest at 15-20 kts with gusts 25-35 kts by Noon Friday. Isolated showers and thunderstorms will also be possible starting around Noon, with an increasing trend from late afternoon through the evening. Winds diminishing to 5-15 kts gusting to 20 kts Friday evening.
