Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Flagstaff AZ 932 AM MST Sat Jul 25 2020 .SYNOPSIS...Thunderstorm activity is expected to continue each afternoon Saturday through Monday with the highest chances across the eastern portion of the area. High pressure will build over the area by the midweek brining warmer temperatures and a downturn in monsoon activity. && .UPDATE...Radar and satellite imagery show a few lingering light showers from Snowflake to Ganado and along the Utah border east of Page. Cloud cover is rapidly evaporating across much of the area that will allow for heating this morning and likely earlier onset of thunderstorms than the past few days. Look for isolated to scattered showers and thunderstorms starting about noon in Yavapai and Coconino Counties. Already seeing some cumulus clouds forming in the White Mountains and expect to hear the first thunder of the day there in the next hour ro so. Scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms will form from the White Mountains along the Mogollon Rim northwest to Flagstaff with coverage becoming more scattered the farther west. Through the afternoon, activity will move northeast off of the rim and form on the higher terrain along the New Mexico border. The current forecast is tracking well with only slight changes to account for the lingering showers. && .PREV DISCUSSION /407 AM MST/...Expect isolated to scattered thunderstorm coverage in the west with more widespread coverage in the east for Saturday and Sunday. The best coverage each day will be near the White Mountain Region. Precipitable water values remain around 0.75-1" across much of the area with weak steering flow. This will allow for a continued heavy rain threat and potential for training cells. Aside from this, expect gusty winds and small hail to be possible. Expect isolated to scattered thunderstorms to continue on Monday before strong high pressure begins to build back in by midweek. This will begin to inhibit thunderstorm development and lead to an increase in temperatures. Right now, models continue isolated shower activity each day mainly across the far east as moisture lingers in place despite the subsidence from the high. As flow becomes more westerly aloft, expect that moisture to begin to be more shallow. Toward the end of next week, high placement may allow for an easterly wave of moisture to sneak in and lead to better development. With ridge heights likely still remaining around 590 mb,confidence is not high. && .AVIATION...For the 18Z package...Scattered shra/tsra developing aft 18Z, with isold +tsra. Highest storm coverage along the higher terrain. Most conditions VFR outside of any storms, but MVFR and localized IFR in the stronger storms. Winds outside of storms about 10 kts or less. Aviation discussion not updated for amendments. && .FIRE WEATHER...Expect scattered showers and thunderstorms again today, with slightly less coverage over the western zones. Many locations will again see wetting rainfall. Storm coverage continues to decrease from the west Sunday, with the emphasis shifting to southern Coconino county and points eastward. Winds remain light outside of storms, with low haines indices. Monday through Wednesday...Expect a warming and drying trend to continue during this period, with very little activity over the western and and central zones.
