.SHORT TERM...Next significant weather front making landfall this
morning and through the panhandle by Sunday night. Strong winds in
the marine waters and wind gusts 40 to 60 mph along the coastal
areas. High wind warning issued of for along Southern Clarence
Strait and western Prince of Wales Island for gusts to 60 mph.
Front is fairly fast moving so heavier precipitation is limited
to a few hours. Northern Lynn still under Winter Storm Warning for
snow primarily out the road or near White Pass. Warming spreading
back to the lower levels through the afternoon so shifting back to
a rain then. Behind the front there still seems to be a small
pocket of the thunderstorm potential off the central and
northeast Gulf Coast this afternoon and off the Sitka area this
evening.

The deep (lower 950s mb) low over the western gulf, moves to just
south of the Kenai Peninsula by Monday morning, but the associated impacts
cover the entire gulf for the start of the week. Onshore flow
will continue for the forecast area though the start of the
upcoming week. The wet weather looks to continue, with some
accumulations but should not be enough to cause flooding.

So the weather Monday into Tuesday looks calmer than what has been
ongoing lately, however with the conditions we are staying on
alert to the upcoming small changes.

.LONG TERM.../Tues through Sat as of 10 pm Saturday/ Starting the
long term on Tuesday, a low pressure system will track below the
southern panhandle, bringing light precipitation amounts to
Ketchikan and surrounding areas. As this system moves out, a ridge
builds over the panhandle paired with low pressure systems sitting
on the outer coast. Models are in disagreement as to the movement
and strength of this mid-week low, but it seems to copy the
previous low and track below the southern panhandle. During this
time period, expect drier weather and a break in the clouds. By
the end of the week, a stronger system approaches, and with it
brings strong winds and widespread precipitation.

Through mid-week, models show winds shifting to northerly in the
Northern Lynn Canal. In other locations across the panhandle,
there is model disagreement on wind direction due to uncertainty
on where the low on Thursday will track. If it tracks to the
south, strong southerlies should prevail in the southern part of
the panhandle. Temperatures should drop back down to normal
across the panhandle and near freezing in the northern panhandle
mid-week, bringing with it the chance of snow at sea level.
