A strong winter storm brought snow to portions of western and south central South Dakota. A band of heavy snow developed over northwestern South Dakota and lingered across the area for a prolonged period. Snowfall totals of eight to 15 inches were reported over much of northwestern South Dakota, with locally higher amounts over Harding and Perkins Counties. Areas south and east into south central South Dakota received two to six inches of snow. Wind gusts of 25 to 35 mph and very cold air behind the system produced blowing and drifting snow across the northwestern and west central South Dakota plains, as well as wind chill values to 25 below zero.
