Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service San Juan PR 1124 AM AST Thu Sep 12 2019 .UPDATE...Mid level ridge will continue to dominate across the northeast Caribbean. Low-mid level water vapor satellite imagery also shows a dry air mass over PR and USVI. As a result, some subsidence aloft is keeping the local atmosphere relatively stable this morning. In addition, the overall moisture is just below normal with TJSJ morning sounding showing 1.67 inches of precipitable water. Therefore, although afternoon showers and thunderstorms will occur the coverage should be slightly less than yesterday. Still expecting some convection developing across portions of the San Juan Metro area as well as the interior and northwest sections of Puerto Rico. Elsewhere, mainly fair weather conditions are expected to continue the rest of today. No changes were made to the forecast package this morning as it is in line with the latest thinking. && .AVIATION...VFR conds expected at most of the TAF sites, except TJBQ and TJSJ where SHRA/TSRA is possible between 18Z-22Z. && .MARINE...Marine conditions will continue tranquil across all the local waters through at least Saturday. Winds around 10 kt and seas of 2-4 feet. && .PREV DISCUSSION... /issued 447 AM AST Thu Sep 12 2019/ SYNOPSIS... Fairly typical weather conditions will prevail for the next few days across the region. Showers and some thunderstorm activity can be expected, though not quite as vigorous as what we have seen earlier in the week. However, by this weekend, a tropical wave is projected to arrive, bringing in more active weather. Next week is very uncertain due to a few tropical waves in the Atlantic that could develop into organized tropical systems. SHORT TERM...Today through Saturday... A mid level ridge over the region will continue to hold through the short term period as it moves slowly to the west. However, the ridge is not strong enough to suppress convective activity driven by diurnal effects each afternoon over portions of the interior and western Puerto Rico as well over the San Juan metro area. Light steering east to southeast winds will prevail and slow moving showers and thunderstorms will lead to urban and small stream flooding. Normal to above normal temperatures are expected to continue across the islands for the next few days. Across the U.S. Virgin Islands, a fair weather pattern should continue with sunny skies during the early morning hours and streamers developing over and to the west of the islands between the late morning through early afternoon hours. This may result in minor rainfall accumulations over land areas. A tropical wave is forecast to enter the eastern Caribbean and move across the Leeward Islands by late Saturday into Sunday, this will increase moisture advection and the frequency of showers and intensity by Saturday night, particularly over the eastern waters and across the U.S. Virgin Islands and eastern Puerto Rico. LONG TERM...Sunday through Thursday... A lot of uncertainty exists in the long range forecast, given the potential for tropical waves east of our region to develop further into organized tropical systems. If these waves develop, yet don't move into our region, there will still be indirect impacts to our forecast next week. At least the forecast for the beginning of the next week looks a little clearer. Moisture from a tropical wave is expected to arrive on Sunday. Forecast models earlier in the week suggested a potential for this wave to develop into a tropical depression, but as we near the weekend, this threat has diminished. However, a wet Sunday is expected as this moisture combines with surface heating and local terrain effects to produce ample shower activity. Furthermore, an inverted upper level trough could aid in enhancing these showers. Thus the threat exists for strong thunderstorms with frequent lightning, gusty winds, heavy rain, and localized flooding. Another batch of moisture moves in for Monday, leading to similar impacts as Sunday. Thereafter, the forecast becomes more hazy, both literally and figuratively. Saharan dust could move in towards the middle of the week, though models disagree on the timing. Furthermore, long range models also suggest the potential for one or two tropical waves to develop further into tropical systems later next week in the central Atlantic. However, little more can be said regarding the long range forecast until models begin to have more agreement on a solution. AVIATION... Mainly VFR conditions are expected to prevail across all terminals during the next 24 hours. However, SHRA/TSRA btw 16z-22z should cause tempo MVFR conditions at TJMZ/TJBQ. ESE winds expected at 8-12 kt with sea breeze variations after 14z at TJSJ/TJBQ/TJMZ. MARINE... Finishing off the workweek, fairly calm weather conditions are expected to continue, with seas at or below 5 feet. Winds will be out of the east between 5-15 knots. During the weekend, active weather is possible with the arrival of a tropical wave.
