Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Boise ID 242 PM MST Sun Feb 24 2019 .SHORT TERM...Tonight through Wednesday...The ongoing winter storm will continue into Tuesday with heavy snow in the mountains and rain or rain/snow mix at lower elevations. Focus of precipitation development remains in the mountains under a strong west-southwest flow aloft while much of southeast Oregon and lower elevations of southwest Idaho will see little precipitation. With rising snow levels and above freezing surface temperatures little additional accumulation is expected in the Baker County and the Weiser River valley through Monday, thus have pulled the Advisory from these zones. Blowing and drifting snow will continue in the mountains as gusty winds persist overnight. Winds increase on Monday as flow aloft strengthens with the strongest winds across far southeast Oregon and southwest Idaho. Tuesday is potentially colder and drier as several forecast models push a cold front through much of the region. Have trended the forecast in this direction which cuts down on accumulations across east- central Oregon and the west-central Idaho mountains Tuesday afternoon. However, the break in precipitation would be short- lived with the front returning northward early Wednesday. The cold frontal passage would also briefly drop snow levels to valley floors early Tuesday, before rising again to 4-5k feet on Wednesday. .LONG TERM...Wednesday night through Sunday...An active pattern continues. The closed low off the PACNW coast will move inland in Thursday which will keep the chance of precipitation through the day. A cold front is still expected sometime on Thursday although some minor timing differences still exist. Snow levels early on Thursday will be upwards of 5000 ft, but quickly decrease through the day to valley floors behind the cold front. Cooler and dry conditions on Friday will be short lived. Models are in good agreement of a mild subtropical Pacific low with a tropical moisture tap moving in for Saturday and Sunday. && .Aviation...Snow and rain showers will produce periods of IFR/MVFR through Thursday. Significant accumulations are expected in the mountains. Snow levels are rising and will peak at 3500-4500 ft later this afternoon, so the lower valley locations will continue to see rain.
