A long duration high wind event occurred across the area on February 24th. A low pressure system tracked out of the southern Plains and rapidly deepened as it moved towards the Great Lakes Region.

Deaths and injuries are direct and indirect together, as the offices filed them. Damage is property and crops in the dollars of the year, not adjusted for inflation, and only where an office estimated it.

A long duration high wind event occurred across the area on February 24th. A low pressure system tracked out of the southern Plains and rapidly deepened as it moved towards the Great Lakes Region. This low originated over the panhandle of Texas on the 23rd with central pressure of 998 mb. The low tracked northeast to near Chicago by late on the 23rd, lifting a warm front across northern Ohio. The low continued northeast towards eastern portions of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, deepening to 974 mb by mid-day on the 24th. This low extended a cold front over northern Ohio, moving west to east, and brought very strong southwest to westerly winds to the region during the morning hours on the 24th. Strong winds behind the cold front began in Northwest Ohio around 8 AM and reached Northeast Ohio just before Noon. Wind gusts of 50-60 mph were common through the afternoon and into the evening with some locations experiencing gusts of over 60 mph. Some of the peak wind reports included 67 mph at Cleveland Hopkins and Lorain County Airports, 64 mph at Toledo Express Airport, 63 mph at Findlay Airport, 61 mph at Akron-Canton, Burke Lakefront, Wayne County, and Youngstown-Warren Airports, 60 mph at Mansfield Lahm Airport, 59 mph at Erie-Ottawa and Toledo Executive Airports, and 58 mph at Cuyahoga County Airport.
The persistent battering of the very strong winds resulted in thousands of power outages to residents across the area. Over 200,000 power outages were reported across Ohio. Damage to trees were common, as large limbs were snapped or whole trees uprooted, exasperated by wet soil conditions that allowed trees to be toppled easily. In some cases trees fell on homes, power wires, and other structures. At least 2 semi-trucks were flipped on area roadways and a ban on empty semi-trucks was issued prior to the onset of strong winds for the Ohio Turnpike and I-90 by the Ohio Department of Transportation. Structural damage from the wind was also reported to numerous structures.

lingering over the lakes into Monday. High pressure over the
Northern Plains will build southeast over the Great Lakes region
on Tuesday and remain over the area through Wednesday.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH MONDAY/...
Made changes to the POP's to reflect current trends. While an
isolated thunderstorms could occur the chances are too low to
mention in the forecast.
Still seeing impressive pressure rises in the wake of the cold
front across Iowa into northern Illinois. A few gusts to 50
knots have occurred in these areas. As the low continues to
deepen these winds may increase slightly. Gusts up to 65 mph
still look possible.

Low pressure over southeast Wisconsin will continue to deepen
as it moves northeast across the Great Lakes region this
morning. The associated cold front will move across the lower
Great Lakes this morning with a trough of low pressure then
lingering over the lakes into Monday.
This impressive storm system continues to produce very strong
winds. The first wave of winds will be along the cold front
where some showers, maybe a rumble of thunder, will assist in
bringing a portion of the 70 mph winds at 2000 feet down to the
surface. This first round of stronger winds will arrive across
NW Ohio around 530 am than sweep eastward through the morning.
Any location along this front could see a severe wind gust. As
the cold advection deepens late this morning into the afternoon
the very gusty winds will ramp back up. The deep mixing will
transfer the higher wind speeds down to the surface with 55 to
65 mph wind gusts common. The best locations to see the
stronger gusts will be near and north of a line from Marion to
Corry. However any location could see one of these damaging wind
gusts into this evening. The eastern half of the region will
likely see these stronger gusts continue into the overnight
hours, especially closer to the lakeshore. Winds may decrease
enough overnight into Monday morning to get rid of the high wind
warning at some point. We may end up needing to issue a wind
advisory for several more hours after the warning ends.
Something for later shifts to evaluate.
Winter weather will also come back to the region with any
lingering showers changing to snow this afternoon into the
evening. By sunset it appears some lake effect snow will
attempt to develop and become a bit more organized after dark.
The stronger winds should drive the highest amounts farther
inland across NW PA. Current thinking places the highest amounts
near the PA/NY border with around 5 inches possible by sunrise
Monday morning. Elsewhere across Erie and Crawford county it
appears that 1 to 3 inches of snow will be possible but the very
strong winds will blow this snow around. So with the higher
amounts inland and the expectation that the snow will be blown
around we have hoisted a winter weather advisory for Erie and
Crawford Counties in PA for tonight through mid morning on
Monday.
Highs will occur early this morning across the region then fall
through the day in the wake of the cold front. Lows tonight
will dip into the teens at most locations. The gusty winds will
knock wind chill values down to around zero. Cooler on Monday
with highs mostly in the 20s.

.SHORT TERM /MONDAY NIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY NIGHT/...
Surface winds will continue to decrease Monday night but remain with
an onshore flow off the lake. Scattered snow flurries and lake
effect snow showers will continue for the primary Snowbelt areas of
far NE Ohio and NW Pennsylvania Monday evening. The latest 00z NAM,
4KM WRF, and some of the other short term model guidance show a
little disturbance moving through the 500 mb flow late Monday night
into Tuesday morning across northern Ohio into NW Pennsylvania. We
have bumped up precip chances a little bit for a dusting of light
snow across northern Ohio. Additional inch or so will be possible
the Snowbelt area. Surface winds will shift to more northerly by
Tuesday morning. Just a first initial glance of some of the 06z
model runs indicate we may see a little better chance of light snow
Tuesday morning. This is something we can fine tune after we get
done with this current storm system. Scattered light snow will
diminish Tuesday afternoon as the disturbance loses support.
Seasonably cold temperatures will continue through Wednesday with a
east to northeasterly surface flow.
Another better organized wave with a little more moisture to work
with comes into the Great Lakes region Wednesday morning through
Wednesday night. This feature will bring a better chance of
widespread light snow to the area, especially areas further north. A
little rain snow mix or change over to rain will be possible across
central Ohio. We may see a couple inches of snow for the northern
areas with that mid week system.

.LONG TERM /THURSDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
Another fast moving mid level wave and disturbance will track across
the Ohio Valley region late on Thursday into Thursday night. We will
likely see another round of light snow with an inch or two possible.
The EURO has come into line with what the GFS has been showing as an
outlier over the past couple days. Now most of the guidance for the
end of next week show another strong storm system develop across the
Central U.S. and moving up through the Great Lakes region, another
Panhandle type hook system. It appears we will be on the warmer side
of that next weekend system and more wind. Details are uncertain at
this time but the potential for more active weather is increasing
again for next weekend.

.AVIATION /12Z Sunday THROUGH Thursday/...
Strong low pressure will move across the central Great Lakes
early this morning. A strong cold front will race across the
region with showers, maybe a thunderstorm, along it. Confidence
not high enough to mention the thunder chance in the TAF. MVFR/IFR
conditions are already occurring near any of the showers. MVFR
should spread quickly eastward across the entire region as
winds shift to the west southwest and increase. Any remaining
rain showers will transition to some snow by late afternoon and
continue into the overnight across NE Ohio into NW PA.
Strong winds will be the main story with gusts of 55+ knots
likely. The strongest winds will likely be near the cold front
as it crosses the region from west to east but gusts 45+ will
continue well into the evening.
OUTLOOK...Non-VFR likely Sunday night into Monday in lake
effect snow across NE OH/NW PA.

.MARINE...
There are no changes with the latest forecast update for the lake.
We will likely see Storm conditions for the central and eastern
portion of the lake later today through tonight and Gales for the
western end as well. Southerly winds will increase this morning 30
to 40 knots becoming southwesterly 40 to 50 knots with gusts over 60
knots likely. Strong off shore flow on the western end of the lake
will cause water levels to drop by several feet, below the critical
water level for safe navigation. Water levels will rise several feet
on the eastern portion of the lake and could cause some flooding or
erosion. Winds will become more westerly later tonight through
Monday with a gradual decrease in wind speeds on Monday into Monday
night. Winds will become northerly to northeasterly by Tuesday and
mid week.
Ice on the lake will get stirred up as numerous floes have
developed. The strong winds will likely cause ridging and rafting of
the ice. The strong winds will also likely push the ice inland as
ice shoves develop, especially lakeshore areas which face southwest
or westerly with onshore flow. Some damage from the ice could occur
along the shore to structures due to the high water levels and
strong winds.

Cleveland Hopkins Airport reported a 67 mph wind gust at 12:58 pm local time. Burke Lakefront Airport reported a 61 mph wind gust at 10:23 am local time. Cuyahoga County Airport reported a 58 mph wind gust at 11:45 am local time. Cuyahoga County was the hardest hit county during this high wind event. Numerous trees, power lines, and power poles were reported down across the county with almost every city reporting wind-related incidents. Thousands were without power on the 24th into the 25th and some residences did not receive power for days. Several school districts were closed due to wind-related damage or power outages. Several buildings received wind damage during the event as trees and power lines fell onto structures. The most notable building damage was an entire apartment complex in Woodmere lost its roof, crashing onto several vehicles below. This event was the most significant non-thunderstorm wind event for the county since the post-tropical remnants of Hurricane Sandy in October 2012 in structures damaged and dollars of damage.
An automated weather station in Conneaut measured a 69 mph wind gust at 8:50 pm local time. Trees and power lines were downed across the area. All school districts in Ashtabula County were closed on the 25th due to the impacts from the strong winds.
