Latest surface obs show the cold front from near Chandler to
Purcell to just south of Vernon. Temperatures are falling quickly
behind it, and thermal profiles are now supportive of snow across
northwest Oklahoma. As cold advection continues across the rest of
the area, saturation/lift within dendritic growth zone should be
confined to a fairly narrow and quick moving frontogenetically
forced band tonight. Thus, accumulations should be minimal,
generally less than an inch.
Post-frontal northerly winds could be quite strong overnight.
Current configuration of the Wind Advisory seems to cover the
potential impacts fairly well, though a southeastward expansion
into south-central and southeast Oklahoma may be needed.

Ceilings will be variable throughout the TAF period
until storm system exits by mid-day Saturday. A cold front will
exit from southeastern Oklahoma tonight. Strong/gusty NW/N winds
are expected behind the front. Brief periods of light rain and
snow are possible.

DISCUSSION...
Surface low pressure, located over the eastern Texas Panhandle, will
move east and southeast across Oklahoma tonight. Very strong
northerly winds will develop behind an associated cold front with
some gusts to 50 mph possible. Meanwhile, a mid and upper level
trough will move across the southern Plains. Lift associated with
the front and trough will likely result in scattered showers and
perhaps a few thunderstorms this evening. As thermal profiles cool
below freezing, rain will transition to snow. This will occur
across parts of northern Oklahoma mainly after 9 pm then farther
south after midnight. Overall, snow is not expected to persist
long enough for accumulations of more than 1 inch. At this time we
will maintain the wind advisory through early Saturday morning
with no winter headlines. With regards to thunderstorms, there may
be a brief 1 to 3 hour window 11 pm - 2 am when elevated storms
may develop across mainly southeast Oklahoma. Instability and
effective shear will support a few storms with hail.
Most if not all of the precipitation is expected to end by sunrise
Saturday. Saturday will be rather cold and windy with decreasing
winds by evening.
A south wind will return on Sunday and temperatures will warm into
the 40s and mid 50s.
Another trough will approach the southern Plains around Tuesday
or Wednesday of next week. A very strong south wind will develop
ahead of this system Monday with a strong north wind expected by
Tuesday. Another front may move across the region Thursday, but
overall temperatures will remain near average for most of next
week.
