Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Las Vegas NV 825 PM PDT Wed Jul 10 2019 .SYNOPSIS...The weather pattern will become more summerlike through the weekend as a ridge of high pressure builds over the Four Corners region. This will result in hotter temperatures and thunderstorm chances mainly in northwest Arizona. && .UPDATE...High based convection rooted in the ~500mb layer developed over the Coconino Plateau region of northern AZ this afternoon, and has since drifted northwest into the eastern portions of the Arizona strip. About 70 cloud-to-ground lightning strikes were detected across northern Mohave county, mainly north and east of Mount Trumbull. Current infrared trends suggest warming cloud tops and decreasing storm activity with the loss of daytime heating, and I expect minimal additional activity overnight. Similar conditions are in store for Thursday, with broad layer of mid level moisture, currently over Sonora, expected to drift northwest into our region by the late morning. While instability will remain fairly marginal, warm surface surface temperatures and a weak vort max lifting north should generate greater storm coverage across northern Mohave County during the late afternoon and evening. Dry lightning and gusty outflow winds will be the main concerns. Will be making a few minor updates to the grids but overall things are well in hand. -Outler- && .DISCUSSION...Latest satellite imagery showing mainly mid level clouds spreading northwest through Arizona. So far, these have been rather shallow with very little vertical development and no lightning strikes have been reported. This trend is expected to continue for the next couple of days as high pressure over the four corners region helps pull moisture northward through Arizona and into the eastern areas of the forecast area. Surface dewpoints remain rather low with only a slight increase during the day and most of the area is currently seeing humidity values in the single digits. The models are showing additional mid level moisture increasing Thursday along with slightly lower instability. This should help to generate a few isolated thunderstorms across western Arizona. Another thing to keep an eye on is a weak disturbance heading up the Colorado River Thursday which could help to enhance thunderstorm development. The lower 700mb remain rather dry so any thunderstorms that do develop are expected to remain dry. So dry lightning and gusty winds will be the main concern with any storms. The models are hinting at some additional moisture being pulled north Friday which could lead to a slightly higher coverage of mainly dry thunderstorms and possibly as far west as the Colorado River. Along with the increase in thunderstorm chances over northern Arizona, we are also looking at temperatures continuing to climb. Temperatures Thursday though Saturday should be about 4-7 degrees above normal putting Las Vegas close to 110 degrees. A weak shortwave pushing into the west coast early next week should help suppress the high and bring in slightly cooler temperatures along with the moisture being shoved east. && .FIRE WEATHER...Increasing mid level moisture will move in Thursday and Friday which look to generate some high based dry thunderstorms across Northwest Arizona. Coverage is expected to be borderline for Red Flag conditions, but after chatting with Prescott and Color County dispatch offices went ahead and issued the Red Flag Warning for dry thunderstorms on Thursday. Minimum RH values will remain in the single digits with poor recoveries overnight. Will hold off for any Red Flag products on Friday until we see what happens Thursday. && .AVIATION...For McCarran...Clear conditions will continue through tonight with some clouds above 12 kft making an appearance Thursday and Friday. East-southeast wind with gusts up to 15 kts into early evening will shift more southerly overnight. Light easterly wind expected to develop again late Thursday morning before winds shift southwesterly with gusts 20-25 kts. For the rest of southern Nevada, northwest Arizona and southeast California...Cloudiness above 12 kft will be on the increase along and east of the Colorado River Valley tonight and Thursday. Isolated thunderstorms with gusty winds possible in northern Mohave County Thursday afternoon.
