Issued at 940 PM CST Thu Feb 7 2019 Chase, Hayes and Frontier County were added to the Wind Chill Advisory. All of western and north central Nebraska are in the advisory tonight through Friday morning. Wind chill values from 15 below to 29 below can be expected, with the lowest wind chills across northern Nebraska. && .SHORT TERM...(This evening through Friday night) Issued at 314 PM CST Thu Feb 7 2019 The main sensible weather concern is centered on wind chills tonight into tomorrow morning. Dry conditions prevail in the short term period. Latest day cloud phase distinction RGB shows stratocu across much of northern NEB into north central NEB with some higher clouds overhead. Latest water vapor imagery shows a mid- level trough over much of the central CONUS with a shortwave trough apparent moving into the NEB Panhandle from southeast WY. Elsewhere, a ridge extends from the central/eastern Gulf Coast to the Middle Atlantic offshore waters and a weak ridge extends north across the West Coast. The aforementioned shortwave trough will quickly move eastward across the Lower Missouri Valley as the mid-level trough moves east and deepens over eastern Ontario tonight. Meanwhile, modest MSL pressures rises will spread across the area tonight as surface high pressure evolves south into the eastern Central Plains. The combination of light winds and clear skies will promote good radiational cooling conditions. This will help support sub-zero lows area-wide that will be near to several degrees cooler than this morning. Lows are forecast from 12 below near the NEB-SD border to approaching zero across extreme southwest NEB. There should be enough light breezes to produce wind chills 20-29 below across much of the local forecast area. The coldest wind chills are anticipated to be reached in the evening hours into early morning tomorrow. Mid-level height rises start spreading across the region tonight as the low-amplitude ridge builds in overhead tomorrow. This will help start a quick and modest warm up as southerly flow takes over and ushers milder air into the Central High Plains. Highs are forecast from the teens across far north central NEB to mid 30s in extreme southwestern NEB, albeit still near 8-18 degrees below seasonable normals. Lows will be warmer tomorrow night also, generally a few degrees below normal, with lows reading generally between 10-15 above. .LONG TERM...(Saturday through Thursday) Issued at 314 PM CST Thu Feb 7 2019 Southerly flow continues through Saturday wherein highs will peak this weekend with 30s to lower 40s. Fair and dry conditions continue until a shortwave trough moves into the Central High Plains Saturday night. This will bring snow chances with snow likely early Sunday across much of the eastern Sandhills and north central NEB. The open wave supports the potential for light snow accumulations across northern NEB with some colder air filtering in on Sunday. Of which, Sunday highs are forecast to read well below seasonable values, from near 10 to 25 above. Lastly, wind chills look to be approaching 20 below zero across parts of northwestern NEB as well so that will be something to monitor as Sunday gets closer. Otherwise, the large scale pattern continues to look unsettled with chances for snow late Sunday night through Monday night. This next disturbance is expected to move from the central West Coast Sunday into the Central High Plains by Monday that will then lift into the Upper Midwest and Upper Great Lakes by early Tuesday.
