Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Tucson AZ 1014 AM MST Tue Apr 23 2019 .SYNOPSIS...A chance of showers and thunderstorms today and this evening. The second half of the week will see high pressure bring a rapid warming trend with 90s for much of the area by Friday. Warm and dry for the weekend. && .UPDATE...Updated the forecast to account for high res models showing run to run consistency of convection forming northeast of Tucson in northern Graham/Greenlee Counties and tracking toward the SW through SE Pinal and portions of Pima County later this afternoon and into the evening. As the upper level low shifts south and slightly east, jet energy will increase along the NW side, thus providing better lift/exhaust for convection. In addition, steep low/mid level lapse rates and classic inverted V soundings will help drive gusty outflow winds. There is a possibility that as the jet streak slides into the area, combined with cold pool generation, organization of convection could occur. This could increase the chance of blowing dust, with the best chance from SE Pinal into portions of Pima County. Any dust would move from the northeast toward the southwest. Confidence is not high, but it is worth a mention. The timing of this area of showers/thunderstorms and potential dust would be near the evening rush hour across the NW portions of the Metro and along the I10 corridor. && .PREV DISCUSSION...issued 320 AM MST Tue Apr 23 2019...A low pressure system is bringing scattered showers and thunderstorms to the area today into this evening. Favored locations will be in and around mountains with some storms pushing into valley locations this afternoon. Dry microburst activity is possible, but most storms should behave themselves. The second half of the week will see a strong, long period, low amplitude ridge build in from the south and west. That will quickly push temperatures back to around 10 to 12 degrees above average Thursday into the weekend. Mid to upper 90s from Tucson westward by Friday. && .AVIATION...Valid through 24/12Z. FEW clouds from KTUS west, with SCT/BKN clouds AOA 8-12kft AGL east of KTUS. Isolated SHRA/-TSRA becoming scattered this afternoon. Otherwise VFR. Normal diurnal wind trends generally under 10kts, except for gusty outflow winds possible with thunderstorms. Aviation discussion not updated for TAF amendments. && .FIRE WEATHER... Increasing shower and thunderstorm chances today. Some of these storms will produce little or no rain with dry lightning possible. Dry weather returns by Wednesday with the exception of the White Mountains, where lingering showers are possible in the afternoon.
