.SYNOPSIS...
A major winter storm today into early Thursday will bring heavy,
wet snow and the potential for power outages across interior
southern New England. Mainly heavy rain and strong winds will
occur along and southeast of the Boston to Providence corridor,
with the potential for some renewed river/stream flooding.
Seasonable weather is expected Thursday night through the weekend.
An upper trough may generate scattered rain and snow showers Friday.
A storm will develop over the Southern Plains this weekend. It will
either pass south of us and move out to sea, or it will bring rain
and snow to us early next week.

Overview...
992 mb low east of ACY with 3 hour pressure falls of 8 mb NE of
the low. WV imagery quite impressive with well defined comma
head. Numerous lightning strikes in the southern comma head and
at the edge of the dry slot. Models have converged on a track
between ACK and the benchmark which climatologically favors
heavy snow west of the I-95 corridor. The challenge will be
snowfall forecast along the I-95 corridor where rain/snow line
will set up initially into early evening before collapsing
toward the coast. Precip intensity beginning to ramp up across
SNE as large scale synoptic forcing increases with mesoscale
banding to the west where very heavy snowfall rates observed.
Precip Type and Snowfall...
GFS thermals appear too warm with a consensus track south of
ACK. Low level warming in the BL will not likely get much past
SE MA. Blended the hi-res guidance with the NAM and ECMWF for
sfc temps which will be the main driver for rain vs accumulating
snow along I-95. Initially, rain/snow mix with minimal roadway
accum due to marginal suffuse temps, but temps will begin to
cool this evening as pres falls to the south move to the E/NE
with winds backing to the NE then N.
Snowfall will continue increase across the interior through the
afternoon and this evening as an impressive comma head lifts
north across SNE tonight to the NW of the mid level low which
tracks south of ACK. Snowfall rates of 1-3 inches/hour are
possible at times given tremendous omega in the DGZ along with
steep mid level lapse rates suggesting some thundersnow.
Thundersnow noted across NJ at this time. Cooling temps along
I-95 will result in rain or rain/snow mix changing to a period
of heavy snow and possibly a bit to the east across interior SE
MA. Timing of the heavy snow 01-05z Providence and 03-09z Boston
and NE MA. Models really target NE MA late this evening through
the overnight period.
Dry slot likely confined to Cape/islands after 03z and can't
rule out a thunderstorm developing in the dry slot tonight given
steep lapse rates near 7 C/km 925-700 mb layer. Precip
intensity will begin to diminish near the south coast after 03z
with this trend lifting north across the region overnight, but
heavy snow likely persisting in NE MA until late tonight and
toward daybreak.
Regarding snow accum, we maintained 12-18 inches across much of
interior MA west of the 128 belt into portions of northern CT.
Amounts decreasing to 6-12 inches a bit west of I-95 including
northern RI and 2-6 inches across interior SE MA and central
and interior SW RI. Little to no accum SE coastal MA and Cape
Cod.
Still an uncertain forecast within the axis of the rain/snow
line which includes Boston to Providence. We generally have 4-8
inches with the higher amounts in the western and northern
suburbs. A very sharp snowfall gradient near the rain/snow line
so very different outcome if this line is off by 10 miles in
either direction.
Snow Impacts...
Wet snow just to the north and west of the rain/snow line will
increase risk of downed tree limbs and power lines which
includes Boston and Providence and N/W suburbs as well as
central interior locations around the I495 belt to I84 corridor
in CT. In addition, near blizzard conditions possible late this
evening and overnight across interior NE MA where N/NE gusts
30-40 mph overlap the heavy snowfall.
Strong Winds...
Anomalous low level jet up to 4 SD above normal lifts north
across eastern New Eng late afternoon and this evening, shifting
to NE MA overnight. Wind gusts to 50-60 mph possible across east
coastal MA with 40-50 mph across rest of eastern MA and southern
RI. While this is not as strong as the prev system, with many
trees weakened and lots of damage around the area, this could
exacerbate the issue. Will continue with wind headlines.

.SHORT TERM /6 AM THURSDAY MORNING THROUGH 6 PM THURSDAY/...
Thursday...
Some wrap around light snow will likely linger in the morning
across northern MA and especially NE MA with minor additional
accum. Otherwise, mostly cloudy skies. Gusty winds in the
morning across eastern MA with gusts to 40 mph possible in the
from Cape Ann to Cape Cod. Winds will diminish in the
afternoon.

.LONG TERM /THURSDAY NIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
Big Picture...
Longwave pattern develops into a ridge-west/trough-east late week
and maintains that through the first half of next week. Shortwave
scale shows amplifying troughs over the Eastern USA and Eastern
Pacific while a strong ridge builds over the Western USA. Two jet
streams in this pattern, a northern stream from Western Canada into
the Northeast USA and a southern jet west-to-east across the
southern tier of the USA.
The ridge and troughs slowly move east with time, but maintain
themselves through the middle of next week. Within this flow,
northern stream shortwaves move from the coast of Alaska and from
far Northern Canada, then drop south and try to phase with the
southern jet during the weekend. This phasing would generate a new
storm over Texas/Oklahoma that sweeps east to the Atlantic coast.
The amount of phasing, and the resulting further digging of the
eastern trough, will determine whether we have another storm
affecting us early next week.
Model mass fields are in agreement into the weekend, but even during
Sunday the models show significant 18-24 hour differences in
placement of the approaching northern stream shortwave. Confidence
is moderate through Sunday and low for early next week.

Thursday night-Friday...
The remnants of the current storm will spin north through Northern
Maine Thursday night. Meanwhile the primary upper low, its cold
pool, and moisture will sweep east from the Great Lakes and cross
New England on Friday. Lift should be enough to keep skies mostly
cloudy and generate scattered rain/snow showers.
Saturday-Sunday...
Upper low moves to Nova Scotia Saturday, but remains close enough to
maintain cyclonic flow over New England with a focus on Northern New
England. This change may be enough to diminish sky cover a little,
but still expect partly cloudy skies with the most clouds in
northern Mass.
Upper ridge then builds in Saturday night and Sunday, bringing
clearing skies and light wind. More clouds move in from the
southwest Sunday night.
Monday through Wednesday...
Biggest concern in the long term period is early next week. If the
Alaska coast shortwave phases as shown on the GFS, we would expect a
snowstorm to affect Southern New England starting early Monday
morning and continuing through at least Monday night. The GGEM
shows phasing but maintains a progressive tilt trough that would
send the storm out to sea well to our south. The ECMWF shows
phasing...like the GGEM it takes the bulk of the storm out to
sea, but also generates snow or snow showers over New England
under the digging upper low. The ECMWF also shows more of a
Tuesday storm.
So if we get enough phasing to turn the upper flow up the coast, we
have the potential for another snowstorm early next week. The
wide range of potential forecast tracks leaves low confidence in
any timing/solution. We will indicate chance pops for both
Monday and Tuesday, then drier seasonable weather Wednedsday.

Rapidly increasing winds and seas are expected this evening as storm
center moves to near or just east of Nantucket late tonight and
into the Gulf of Maine Thursday morning. ENE to NE storm force
wind gusts are expected this evening into the early morning
hours. These winds will act upon an existing 10 foot swell over
the east coastal waters and still higher swells just east of
the coastal waters to build seas to 20 to 25 feet late this
evening into the Thursday early morning hours across the eastern
coastal waters. Winds will become more northerly and gradually
diminish during Thursday. Seas will gradually subside during
Thursday but probably not subside below 10 feet across the
eastern outer coastal waters until evening.

.HYDROLOGY...
A Flood Watch remains in effect for Rhode Island and Southeast
MA this afternoon into Thursday. A quick 1 to 2 inches of rainfall
is anticipated within a 6 hour period this afternoon and evening.
This may result in some renewed river and stream flooding given
the very high river levels in place. In addition, while this
heavy rain will be short-lived, it may coincide with the evening
rush hour. This may result in some urban and poor drainage
street flooding issues during that time.
We should mention that it is possible that the rain changes to a
period of snow, especially across the hills of northwest RI.
However, latest data suggests the majority of what falls will
be heavy rain and result in the potential for some renewed river
and stream flooding.

.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...
We will continue with a Coastal Flood Warning for the reach of
coastline from Salisbury to Cape Ann and from Hull to Plymouth where
we project a storm surge of 2.5 to 3 feet and waves near or a little
above 20 feet just offshore during the early Thursday morning high
tide cycle. The 1200 UTC model runs continue to curl the low level
jet towards the waters just off of Cape Ann and pointed even in the
direction of Boston's South Shore leading up to the early morning
high tide. Along those stretches of coastline we are anticipating
minor to moderate impacts. We are also wary of significant
vulnerabilities from the last storm. Large breakers from the 20+
waves offshore will offset to some extent the mitigating factor of
relatively low astronomical high tides.
We are also continuing with a Coastal Flood Advisory for the ocean
side of the Cape including Wellfleet, Eastham, Orleans, and Chatham
where there are also vulnerable spots from the last storm. And we
are continuing with the Coastal Flood Advisory for Nantucket for
minor coastal flooding about Nantucket Harbor and moderate erosion
along Nantucket's east side.
