A hot and humid airmass invaded eastern New York beginning on June 30th. It would be the beginning of a heat wave that would last through the Independence Day holiday, and marked the first of several days of 90 degree heat. Combined with dewpoints in the mid-70s, heat indices reached around 100 degrees. The impending heat wave prompted the opening of numerous cooling centers throughout the region.
