Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Elko NV 237 PM PST Fri Jan 19 2018 .SYNOPSIS...Storm system will move into central Nevada tonight with snow tapering off across northern Nevada. Snow will mostly be confined to east central Nevada on Saturday. Brief break in the active weather Saturday night through Sunday morning before next storm system brings more snow to northern and central Nevada beginning Sunday afternoon through Monday. && .SHORT TERM...Tonight through Monday. Cold front across central NV tonight with snow tapering off or ending across northern NV. Snow will continue across White Pine and northeast Nye counties through most of the day Saturday before system finally exits into UT. Additional accumulations of 2 to 4 inches across central NV. Have ended Winter Weather Advisories across Humboldt, northern Elko, and northern Lander/northern Eureka counties as little or no additional accumulations expected. Brief break in the active weather pattern Saturday night through early Sunday afternoon as short wave ridge moves across the area. Next storm system to begin to spread snow across northern NV late Sunday afternoon spreading into central NV late Sunday night. Snowfall accumulations much less than current storm with 1 to 2 inches across northern NV and mostly 1/2 inch or less central NV. .LONG TERM...Monday evening through next Friday. MOdels in much better agreement than yesterday through the long term. A little complicated pattern with Hudson Bay vortex quasi- stationary and Gulf of Alaska low trying to be progressive. Result is a series of flat ridges in between with short waves being tossed off the Alaskan low (everything passing over the Great Basin. Pops rather high for a long range forecast but confidence is moderate, which is much better than yesterday. Have kept pops largely as they were over northern Nevada and raised them some over central and eastern Nevada. Also, QPF's were tweaked a tad upward over northern Nevada. && .AVIATION...Significant winter storm at KEKO and KELY. KEKO will remain under its effects through the night into Saturday mid day. KELY is just beginning to feel it and will remain under it through Saturday afternoon. KWMC is pulling out and should clear up. KTPH will be less affected but showers will affect the vicinity through Friday evening. From around Owyhee to KTPH and eastward expect mountain obscurations, MVFR to IFR cigs, occasional heavier snow showers through Saturday toward the Utah line. With temps below freezing, any mixed precip or partially melted snow on the ground will freeze on metal objects and runways.
