West to northwest winds at times from 6 to 11 mph combined with air temperatures around 20 below to 30 below zero to produce bitterly cold wind chills around -35 to -45 through the morning hours of New Year's Day. The actual air temperature plunged to a record -32 at Concord. As southerly return flow developed behind the retreating ridge, not as extreme wind chills of -20 to -30 occurred from the evening of January 1st into mid morning of January 2nd.
