What happened

The episode as NWS SHV wrote it up.

Severe (D2) drought conditions developed shortly after the start of the new year across much of Grant and LaSalle Parishes, in response to significant dryness that developed during the Fall of 2017. Only 7-8 inches of rain fell across these areas from September 1st to December 31st, which was 12-14 inches below normal, and was only a quarter to a third of normal. This not only resulted in significant topsoil moisture deficits, but also resulted in much below normal streamflows across the Little River bordering Eastern Grant and Western LaSalle Parishes. January rainfall amounts totaled between 3 and 5 inches, with 1-2 inches of this falling on January 27th. However, these cumulative monthly totals were only near to slightly below normal. While these rains eased topsoil moisture dryness, it did little to alleviate the severe drought conditions in place to end the month.
