Scattered thunderstorms developed beneath this feature during the afternoon, with many of the cells producing funnel clouds. One brief tornado was reported in a field about 5 miles southwest of Gridley in northern McLean County. Slow-moving storms dropped locally heavy rainfall across portions of Woodford County, causing flash flooding from Eureka to Washburn.

Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Lincoln IL 302 PM CDT Thu Jun 21 2018 .SHORT TERM...(This evening through Friday) ISSUED AT 302 PM CDT Thu Jun 21 2018 A couple bands of convection have developed in advance of a slow-moving cold front this afternoon...with 19/2pm radar imagery showing most of the storms focused along and near a Galesburg...to Lincoln...to Effingham line. This broken area of thunderstorms will continue to pivot E/NE over the next few hours and will eventually lift mostly N/NE of the KILX CWA by around 00z/7pm. Will continue likely PoPs across all but the far SW through that time accordingly. After that, will reduce PoPs to just low chance as the strongest forcing shifts further north into northern Illinois. Will mention thunder through the evening hours, then will go with chance of showers overnight as daytime instability wanes. Overnight low temperatures will be in the middle 60s. As low pressure currently over northern Missouri tracks E/SE into Indiana, N/NW boundary layer winds on its backside will bring low clouds into central Illinois on Friday. Scattered showers and thunderstorms will continue to be possible: however, the ample cloud cover will significantly limit instability and prevent any strong to severe storm development. In addition, the overcast conditions and northerly winds will keep temperatures on the cool side...with afternoon highs only reaching the lower to middle 70s. && .LONG TERM...(Friday night through Thursday) ISSUED AT 302 PM CDT Thu Jun 21 2018 Once the low tracks further east, rain chances will come to an end Friday night...followed by mostly dry conditions through Monday. The next significant chance for rain will hold off until Tuesday when a short-wave trough tracks through the Plains and drags a weak front through the region. Once this wave passes, all models suggest a strong upper ridge will build over the Midwest for the middle and end of next week...signaling a return to hot/summer weather. Given good consensus, have limited PoPs and raised temps for the latter part of the extended. High temperatures in the 80s on Monday/Tuesday will rise into the lower to middle 90s by Thursday. && .AVIATION...(For the 18Z TAFS through 18Z Friday afternoon) Issued at 1252 PM CDT Thu Jun 21 2018 Two bands of convection have materialized across west-central Illinois early this afternoon. Based on radar timing tools centered on the leading band, have included TEMPO groups for thunder between 18z and 20z at KPIA/KDEC/KBMI...and between 20z and 22z further east at KCMI. Once this initial band pushes through, will only carry VCTS at the terminals for the balance of the afternoon...waiting to see how the second band develops on radar. Think convection will gradually lift N/NE out of the area and dissipate by mid-evening, so have dropped thunder mention after 03z. Main aviation concern overnight into Friday morning will be low ceilings. Current satellite imagery shows MVFR/IFR ceilings on the back side of low pressure over southwest Iowa. ...FUNNEL CLOUDS POSSIBLE THIS AFTERNOON...
Atmospheric conditions exist across the area today that favor the
possible formation of weak circulations, along an existing boundary.
Some of these circulations are occurring underneath developing
showers and thunderstorms, where a funnel cloud may develop. Once the
rain begins, the funnel cloud dissipates.
Low hanging clouds can also appear to dip up and down at times, but
they will not show signs of any rapid rotation. An actual funnel
cloud will exhibit spinning in a counter clockwise direction.
In rare instances, these funnels may briefly touch down. Stay alert,
and be prepared to move to a safe shelter, if a funnel cloud
approaches the ground.

At 250 PM CDT, Doppler radar was tracking a strong thunderstorm near
Athens, or 13 miles south of Mason City, moving northeast at 25 mph.
Winds in excess of 40 mph will be possible with this storm.
Locations impacted include...
Lincoln, Elkhart, Middletown, Hartsburg, Broadwell, Fancy Prairie and
Sweetwater.
This includes the following highways...
Interstate 155 between mile markers 0 and 7.
Interstate 55 between mile markers 111 and 134.
PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...
Torrential rainfall is also occurring with this storm, and may lead
to localized flooding. Do not drive your vehicle through flooded
roadways.
Frequent cloud to ground lightning is occurring with this storm.
Lightning can strike 10 miles away from a thunderstorm. Seek a safe
shelter inside a building or vehicle.

BarkerThe Lincoln radar (KILX), 67 km away, was scanning. The volume nearest the first event began at 20:01 UTC.
1 tornado, 1 flash flood. Local standard time, as filed.
A tornado briefly touched down in an open field about 5 miles southwest of Gridley at 3:02PM CDT. The tornado quickly dissipated about one minute later with no damage being observed.
Slow moving thunderstorms produced rainfall rates of 1.00 to 1.50 inches per hour for two hours during the late afternoon of June 21st in western Woodford County. Numerous rural roads were flooded with flowing water at least six inches deep near Spring Bay, Metamora, Eureka and Washburn. Some roads were closed until just past Midnight CDT. The flooding finally subsided by the early morning hours of June 22nd.
