Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Pocatello ID
147 PM MDT Sat Jul 7 2018
.DISCUSSION...Our weather story continues to be hot and dry as
Idaho lies on the northwest side of a ridge of high pressure.
Diurnal variances to wind directions are anticipated. A weak
disturbance is looking to break up the ridge late Monday and may
cool off select areas of our state in the form of rain showers going
into Tuesday. These showers shouldn't be relied upon though,
forecast models are not agreeing with each other as to whether
they will even happen, or at what time. Even if any do develop,
not much will fall/accumulate. Little to no temperature relief is
seen going through the week with mid or upper 90 degrees
continuing across our area. NP/JAM
&&
.AVIATION...A little afternoon breeze with gusts to 20KT in the
Snake River plain, otherwise fairly light and thermally-driven
wind. Except for a mid-level CIG that develops tonight everywhere
except KSUN which is out of the subtropical moisture flow coming
from Utah. Will clear up during the late morning and early
afternoon. May need a slight chance of TS for Mon afternoon in
those locations. VSBY should be unlimited all locations. Messick
&&
.FIRE WEATHER...Moist unstable air from the subtropics has started
entering the gem state, but only very weakly, with the Driggs area
receiving a trace of precipitation, and some showers moved through
the Caribou NF this morning. A stronger surge of this moisture
should come Mon night, possibly Mon afternoon, and will trigger
showers and, if timing is right, thunderstorms. The better and more
sure thunderstorm threat is Tuesday afternoon/evening. It is
possible that these storms could transition from dry to wet; in any
case, it looks very likely that zones with the critical fuel
conditions will be subject to Red Flag conditions due to lightning
by Tuesday. This flow of moisture is always tricky, and it reduces
the confidence, but this will certainly have to be monitored at
least for now. The focus for Tue convection is the Snake River plain
and any land south or east of it, although a few storms may be
generated in the northern half of the Sawtooth NF and the
southeastern portions of the Salmon-Challis NF. For the wind and
humidity, the wind is not strong where the humidity is low, with
windspeeds expected to be strongest today compared to the next two
days, but lower than yesterday (Fri). With the arrival of the
subtropical air mass on Mon night, it could interact with a weak
trough and also have breezy to windy conditions at night and in the
morning for Mon night/Tue. Strong westerly flow will bring in more
stable and much drier air, and the thunderstorm threat evaporates by
Wed afternoon. Messick

.AIR STAGNATION...There is an outside chance that wildfire smoke
from the Martin Fire in North Central Nevada may track into
Central and Southern Idaho this evening and overnight and settle
under the inversion. This afternoon, the plume was just passing
across the Nevada/Idaho border according to satellite imagery. We
will have to keep our eye on area smoke plumes over Utah as well
especially going into next week; certain long term forecast models
are suggesting a shift in increasing smoke particulates into
southern Idaho early next week. NP
