Afternoon convection became more organized this evening, tapping into available instability and supported by strong outflows. The QLCS has persisted into central Georgia where it is now beginning to fall apart. Main concern has been the damaging winds associated with these storms, and there have been a few reports of small downbursts/straight line wind events. Currently watching another next complex of storms moving into north Georgia from Tennessee. As north Georgia has already been worked over today, with little chance for recovery, but hi-res models (not that they've done a great job with the recent convection) are showing these thunderstorms holding into the north metro area into the overnight period. Will continue to adjust grids as necessary for latest trends. && .PREV DISCUSSION... /Issued 256 PM EDT Wed Jun 27 2018/ SHORT TERM /Tonight through Thursday Night/... Northwest flow is still dominating through the short term period bringing multiple impulses through the area today and Thursday. For this afternoon, a shortwave pushing into north Georgia will help to focus higher coverage of showers/thunderstorms across the northern tier. Scattered thunderstorms are still expected across the rest of the area through this evening. With steepening low level lapse rates, increasing PWATS, MLCAPE >2000 J/kg and DCAPE >1000 J/kg, some storms will likely become severe, with the greatest chance in northern Georgia, generally north of I-20. The greatest threats this afternoon and evening will be damaging winds, hail, frequent lightning, and heavy rain. The severe threat should diminish later in the evening, although showers may linger into night. The aforementioned shortwave will continue to push southeast through the area overnight and will provide a focus for showers and thunderstorms Thursday afternoon as well. In addition, another impulse will push to move into the area Thursday morning. Models have been hinting at the possibility of an MCS moving through the area later on Thursday afternoon, although location is hard to pin down at this point. Regardless, showers and thunderstorms can be expected again tomorrow afternoon/evening. High temperatures today and Thursday are in the 80s and 90s. Max heat index values are around 100-104 in central Georgia for both today and Thursday. Although this is below the 105 degree heat advisory criteria, trends will continue to be monitored for any changes. Reaves LONG TERM /Friday through Wednesday/... High pressure aloft will begin to break down by Friday with a shear axis setting up across southern GA, remaining through the weekend. The local broadcast media reported a tree blown down onto an apartment building in Lawrenceville. Significant damage occurred to the apartment block and one minor injury was reported.
The Georgia Dept. of Transportation reported a tree and power lines blown down on Highway 82 near Marlow Circle.
The Fannin County 911 center reported a power pole and power lines blown down near the intersection of Aska Road and Deep Gap Road.
The Barrow County Emergency Manager reported numerous trees down across the county from Auburn to Winder, Bethlehem and Statham.
The Gilmer County 911 center reported several trees and power lines blown down near the intersection of Zion Hill Road and Gates Chapel Road.
The Whitfield County Emergency Manager and the 911 center reported several trees and power lines blown down across the county from Apison Road and Birdie Lane, south to Dalton along South Dixie Highway.
Gilmer County EMA reported several trees and utility lines down in the 1000 block of Old Hwy 5 N. Vehicle accident also occurred at this location but no injuries were reported. Additional trees and powerlines were reported down in the southwest part of the county, along Sunlight Road.
The Georgia Dept. of Transportation reported a large tree blown down across Highway 136 near Grandview Road.
The Georgia Dept. of Transportation reported a tree blown down along Highway 83 before Fairplay Road.
The Gordon County Emergency Manager reported a house struck by lightning in the 300 block of Knight Bottom Road.

The Cherokee County Emergency Manager reported a house struck by lightning near the intersection of Hester Drive and McClure Drive.
The Douglas County Emergency Manager reported several trees blown down from Winston to east of Fairplay.
The Cherokee County Emergency Manager reported several trees blown down from northwest of Ball Ground to southeast of Canton.
The Catoosa County 911 center reported multiple trees down across the southwestern portion of the county from around the intersection of Three Notch Road and Burning Bush Road to Temperance Hall Road.
The local broadcast media reported several trees blown down in the Lawrenceville area. One tree fell onto a house on Garden Grove Drive causing extensive damage and another fell onto a house on Sydney Pond Circle causing a hole in the roof. No injuries were reported at either location.
The Emergency Manager reported street flooding at the intersection of Oak Street and Simmons Street as a result of heavy rainfall over the area. Radar estimates indicate that approximately two inches of rain fell in the area.
A trained spotter reported a few trees blown down along Bus. Highway 27 around Culberson Avenue.

A trained spotter reported flowing water over Lakeview Avenue, likely a result of Black Branch rising out of its banks from locally heavy rainfall and high runoff rates.

EMA reported multiple trees down across southern end of county, along Sling Alley Rd and Wiggins Rd.
A trained spotter reported flowing water over Chickamauga Avenue in Rossville that was two to three feet deep. The flash flooding resulted from high runoff rates due to locally heavy rainfall.
The local broadcast media reported a house struck by lightning on Warren Road.
The Fayette County 911 center and the Emergency Manager reported trees and power lines blown from the west side of Peachtree City to Starrs Mill.
The Coweta County Emergency Manager reported numerous trees and power lines blown down across the county from near Whitesburg to Corinth and Cannongate, southeast across Newnan to near Senoia.
The Floyd County Emergency Manager and the 911 center reported multiple trees snapped which brought down powerlines off Westhaven Drive, west of Rome. An RV Camper was also damaged at this location.
