PREV DISCUSSION... /Issued 326 PM CST Tue Jan 3 2017/ SHORT TERM... Tonight and Wednesday...Forecast confidence medium. Main issue will be much colder temperatures and wind chills with gusty west northwest winds tonight into Wednesday. Winds will continue to increase out of the west northwest and become gusty into this evening, as the pressure gradient tightens behind the passing Arctic cold front. These winds will remain gusty later tonight into Wednesday. Cold air advection will continue tonight into Wednesday as well. Lows should drop into the 7 to 13 above zero range tonight, with highs Wednesday not rising much above that. Wind chills should drop into the 5 below to around 10 below zero range later tonight into Wednesday. Low clouds will linger into early evening, before moving east of the area. There should be more low clouds moving back into the area later this evening and lingering on Wednesday, as a 500 mb shortwave trough slides east through the region. Wednesday night through Saturday night...Forecast confidence high. Arctic air will prevail the remainder of the week. A series of shortwave troughs will reinforce the arctic air through this period but no snow is expected within the cold and dry airmass. The upper waves and steep low level lapse rates may be enough for sct-bkn stratocumulus clouds at times. The brisk wly winds on Wed will gradually become lighter toward Fri when a weak surface ridge moves across srn WI. Another cold front will then arrive on Sat. Temps this week will be warmer than the previous arctic outbreak, especially over se WI where snow cover is lacking. Low temps will range from the single digits above zero to the single digits below zero, while high temps will range from the upper single digits to teens. Wind Chill temps will range from 10 to 20 below zero each morning. At this time Wind Chill Advisories will probably not be needed but temps are close to criteria toward central WI. LONG TERM...Sunday through Tuesday...Forecast confidence medium. A couple low pressure areas will bring warm advection and an overall pattern change as they track across srn Canada. This will bring chances of light snow and rain, and above normal temps returning for early next week. AVIATION/06Z TAFS/... Low ceilings will be slow to improve overnight, with possibly a slow rise towards 3000 feet above ground level by the late morning hours. It is possible that the area closer to the Illinois stateline could see more breaks with this low ceilings. These clouds should linger into Wednesday morning . Gusty west northwest winds are expected to continue overnight into Wednesday, as cold air moves into the region behind a passing Arctic cold front. Gusts of 25 to 30 knots are anticipated at times. Mid level clouds are likely later in the period as the lower level moisture moves east out of the region. MARINE... Gusty west northwest winds will develop into early this evening, lingering into Wednesday evening, as a tight pressure gradient develops over the area. Gusts to 30 knots are anticipated during most of this period. High waves should build toward and over the open waters of Lake Michigan. Some freezing spray may occur toward the open waters, as cold temperatures move into the region. There is a good chance for 35 knot gales later this evening into Wednesday morning, with strong winds mixing down from above the surface. Will issue a Gale Warning for this period, with frequent gusts to 35 knots.
