Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service San Juan PR 347 PM AST Thu Jul 13 2017 .SYNOPSIS... Upper low to the N of the local islands is expected to remain in the area through the weekend, there is another upper low to the NE of the local islands which is expected to move slightly to the SW but mainly will stay in the Central Atlantic. Strong SFC high pressure in the central Atlantic will continue causing easterly winds across the local islands. Tropical wave to move in on Saturday then another one to be expected at about Tuesday to Wednesday. && .SHORT TERM...Today through Saturday... The TUTT low about 1700 miles NE of San Juan will move about 360 miles southwest by Monday afternoon while the eastern Caribbean is dominated by high pressure aloft. The induced surface trough that generated a complex of thunderstorms overnight in the Anegada passage with over 10 inches of rain has moved northwest and north of the local area. Somewhat drier air follows, but the GFS insists that precipitable water will increase during the period through midday Saturday and this is in line with the latest MIMIC. And, Saturday morning is about the time that the next tropical wave will pass through the area. Rainfall overnight Friday and Saturday should be a little more than it was for our area today. In the mean time although showers are somewhat sparse as of now (13/18Z) they are slowly growing in central and northwest PR and the initiation of thunderstorms is expected--even if their duration is brief. A brief intermission from showers follows but scattered shower are expected to continue until Friday evening when the next wave enhances the activity. .LONG TERM...Sunday through Friday...From previous discussion... An upper level ridge is forecast to build near the region by the upcoming week. As a result, the available moisture will slowly erode after Sunday. However, surges of moisture embedded in the trade winds will bring passing showers at times over the windward sections, followed by the typical afternoon convection over the interior and west sections of Puerto Rico. Another tropical wave is forecast to swing by the islands on Tuesday, increasing the moisture content. After the passage of this wave, GFS model suggests a dry air encompassing through the end of the work week. && .AVIATION...SHRA N of Anegada Passage with minor SHRA in PR.
