.SYNOPSIS...Strong winds will continue into this evening as a low
pressure system moves across Nevada. A few snow showers will also be
possible across portions of the Great Basin. A dry northwest flow
will bring in much cooler temperatures Monday and much lighter winds
can be expected. A dry westerly flow will be in place for the
remainder of the week with temperatures warming to above normal
levels.

.UPDATE...Overall, wind speeds are beginning to decrease. Barring a
sudden reversal, plan to allow the High Wind Warning and Wind
Advisory to expire on schedule at 10 PM. No changes until then.

.Discussion...through Sunday.

A strong low pressure system over California and approaching cold
front were bringing widespread strong winds to the area. A few sites
were hitting warning level winds while numerous sites were hitting
high end advisory level wind speeds/gusts. We still have several
hours of potential for winds to increase so the high wind warning
remains in effect. Web cams and radar indicated rain and snow in the
Sierra with some light rain/ snow reaching into the Owens Valley.
The upper low will move east across Nevada tonight bringing a chance
of rain and snow showers to areas mainly north of Las Vegas during
the evening hours. Showers may linger in far eastern Lincoln and
northern Mohave County overnight but precipitation chances should
end there by daybreak Monday. Winds look to decrease significantly
after midnight as winds start to become northerly behind the exiting
upper low.

A dry northwest flow will follow behind the exiting upper low Monday
with much cooler temperatures and much lighter winds. A dry westerly
flow will persist over the area for the rest of the week with
intermittent high clouds and a warming trend. High temperatures by
Friday are forecast to be about 10 degrees above normal. There are
some model differences for next weekend with the ECMWF indicating
decent ridging while other models indicate continuation of westerly
flow or even weak disturbances possibly bringing light precipitation
to the Sierra. I inherited slight chance pops for the Sierra
Saturday through Sunday and I cannot argue with that too much based
on some of the model solutions. So, I left those slight chances in
the forecast for now.

.AVIATION...For McCarran...Strong, gusty winds will give way to
much lighter winds on Monday. Outside of a chance of northwest
breezes in the morning, light winds following typical diurnal trends
are forecast. A slug of moisture working across the area will likely
keep some clouds around tonight, with just a few high clouds
expected by tomorrow. Expect areas of turbulence through tonight.

For the rest of southern Nevada...northwest Arizona...and southeast
California... Strong, gusty winds will begin to subside tonight,
with northerly breezes remaining in the Colorado River Valley and
Owens Valley monday morning. No operationally impactful weather
forecast tomorrow.

expected. Spotter are encouraged to report any significant weather
according to standard operating procedures.
