Area Forecast Discussion...CORRECTED National Weather Service San Joaquin Valley - Hanford CA 525 AM PDT Fri Sep 1 2017 ...CORRECTED EXCESSIVE HEAT WARNING INFO... .SYNOPSIS...Temperatures will remain above normal through at least the middle of next week. Showers and thunderstorms will be possible in the mountains and desert areas each day mainly in the afternoon and evening. && .DISCUSSION...A weak upper trough dropping south through the Great Basin area helped to energize some thunderstorms around northeastern Kern Co last night. Just a few small dissipating light showers are left in Kern Co along with some remnant cloudiness north to Fresno Co. Temperatures are running up a few degrees from 24 hrs ago across much of the area. A mid/upper level ridge is progged to build inland across northern CA today and Saturday, and continue into the Great Basin region Sunday through Labor Day. Tropical system Lidia is meanwhile forecast to track northwestward from southern Baja to west of southern/central CA by Labor Day. The building ridge of high pressure will bring a return of excessive heat across the San Joaquin Valley, lower foothills and lower elevations in the Kern Co mountains today and especially Saturday, continuing into Sunday. The Excessive Heat Warning remains in effect for these areas through Sunday. Temperatures trend downward but remain above normal for the second half of the holiday weekend as the ridge slides east and low pressure drifts northward offshore. There will also be sufficient moisture for a slight chance of afternoon and evening thunderstorms across the mountain and desert zones through Labor Day. If the track of Lidia delivers more moisture into our area, precipitation could be more widespread Sunday into Labor Day. Models are somewhat similar in the longer range. The ridge is progged to weaken some as low pressure rides up toward the northwest US. The remainder of next week should see temperatures remain a bit above climo with just some slight chances for mountain and desert thunderstorms each day. && .AVIATION... Areas of smoke possible from near Yosemite National Park down through Sequoia National Park from associated wildfires may produce IFR conditions for the next 24 hours. A chance of showers and isolated thunderstorms are expected over the Southern Sierra Nevada and Tehachapi Mountains as well as the Kern County Deserts until 06Z Saturday.
