Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Las Vegas NV 825 PM PDT SUN JUL 17 2016 .SYNOPSIS...Low-grade monsoon moisture will slowly creep west into northwest Arizona and perhaps southern Nevada early in the upcoming week, bringing increasing chances for showers and thunderstorms mainly to areas east of Las Vegas. Drier weather with above normal temperatures may return late in the week. && .UPDATE...The Lake Wind Advisory and Red Flag Warning were allowed to expire on schedule at 8 PM. It is worth noting that surface observations and doppler radar showed a boundary of southeast winds pushing up through the Las Vegas Valley with gusts of 20 to 30 mph and dewpoints rising into the lower to mid 40s. No significant weather is expected from this and winds should decrease slightly through the evening with speeds of 10-20 mph persisting overnight. The grids were updated to reflect these trends...otherwise the forecast detailed in the previous discussion looks good. -Adair && .AVIATION...For McCarran...Southeast winds gusting around 20 kts that pushed across the terminal area shortly before 03Z are expected to persist until around 05Z then become more southerly overnight. Similar conditions are expected Monday, with south winds gusting 18- 24 kts in the afternoon. Outside of winds, no operationally significant weather is expected. For the rest of southern Nevada...northwest Arizona...and southeast California...Gusty southwest winds will prevail for the next few days, but speeds will be just a bit lighter each day through Tuesday in most areas. Outside of a chance of thunderstorms over Mohave County each day, no other adverse weather conditions are expected through the weekend. && .PREV DISCUSSION... 200 PM PDT SUN JUL 17 2016 .DISCUSSION...Our area remains caught between troughing on the West Coast with associated dry southwesterly flow and monsoon moisture trying to come around the western periphery of the sprawling high pressure ridge covering most of the southeast and south central U.S. Thus far, the greatest coverage of clouds has been over extreme southeast San Bernardino County and southern and eastern Mohave County. Under the clouds, surface relative humidities are mainly in the teens, suggesting only virga. Moisture will continue to seep into Mohave County Monday and Tuesday, but make little or no westward progress, so thunderstorm chances should be confined there. By Wednesday and Thursday, a large scale pattern shift begins, as high pressure over the southern states begins to build westward toward our area as the West Coast trough finally starts to lift out. Heights continue to rise over our area over the weekend, resulting in higher temperatures and slightly lower precip chances due to increasing mid level temps. Made only a few minor tweaks to the previous grids, mainly to continue trimming back PoPs from the west and boosting temps a little for the weekend. && .FIRE WEATHER...Due to the state of fuels and the continued hot and dry and breezy conditions, fire danger will remain elevated across the region. Fire weather conditions will improve slightly this week as RH's increase and winds decrease. && .SPOTTER INFORMATION STATEMENT...Spotter activation is not expected at this time.
