Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Pocatello ID 208 PM MDT SUN SEP 11 2016 .SHORT TERM...Tonight through Wednesday night. Satellite imagery shows strong shortwave dropping out of BC Canada with circulation center just north of Idaho panhandle. Strong drying ahead of shortwave pushing through PacNW states with deepest moisture left over Montana. Winds beginning to increase across East Idaho this afternoon as gradient tightens. Moisture band associated with initial front system is very thin so have left only weak collaborative chances for precip along northern and southern borders where best chances exist. In the meantime will leave wind headlines in place as strongest winds likely between 21z-03z. Gradient weakens slightly and turns northeast overnight except over central mtns and along Divide. Base of shortwave trough dives south into northern California/Nevada and cuts off during the day Monday. Southwest flow continues across East Idaho with moisture becoming more widespread. Have increased precip chances across the region Monday into Monday night as low tightens and rotates more consolidated band north into the forecast area. Moisture wraps closer to the low centered over northern Nevada during the day Tuesday with both GFS and NAM pushing dry wedge north into the region. As the low begins to eject northeast Tuesday night, the moisture clustered around the low spreads across the region. Low center shifts across East Idaho Wednesday with trough axis east of the region by Thursday morning. Precipitation Wednesday begins to shift east of the region with most of the region drying out completely Wednesday night. DMH .LONG TERM...Thursday through Sunday. Have left a few lingering showers along Wyoming border during the day Thursday but otherwise dry pattern setting in for remainder of the forecast. Upper ridge amplifies across the Great Basin and East Idaho Thursday night through Saturday. Pacific shortwaves try to flatten the ridge into the weekend but both GFS and ECMWF keep energy well north along the Canadian border. Dry and warm (near or slightly above normal) temperatures are forecast through the remainder of the forecast period. DMH && .AVIATION...A strong cold front is moving through the area this afternoon. Expect gusty winds for all TAF sites this afternoon into early evening. Also...expect low-level wind shear this afternoon for KSUN. Cigs are expected to remain VFR but become cloudy....mostly mid-level...by early morning. Wyatt && .FIRE WEATHER...A strong cold front is moving through area this afternoon. Expect gusts of 25 to 35 mph across much of the area this afternoon into early evening. Higher gusts are possible over the Arco desert and INL. Temperatures will be warmer this afternoon with afternoon humidity readings ranging from the upper single digits to the mid teens. A red flag is in effect this afternoon until 9 pm mdt for all zones expect 475 where relative humidities are slightly higher. Monday expect breezy Northerly winds with low relative humidity in the twenties to thirties and temperatures dropping significantly behind an exiting cold front. Only a slight chance of thunderstorms is expected over the Central mountains and Eastern Highlands mountains on Monday. The upper trough deepens into a upper level low over Northern California by Tuesday morning. Models continue to move this low over our area late Tuesday into Wednesday.
