AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE TALLAHASSEE FL 840 PM EST MON FEB 29 2016 .Near Term [Through Tonight]... High pressure to the east of the region will provide light south to southwesterly flow, which will increase low level moisture over the next couple of days. With mostly clear skies tonight, and light winds, expect areas of fog to develop after midnight. Local guidance has especially high probabilities for visibilities less than a mile toward daybreak on Tuesday and we have included dense fog wording with this update. Expect milder overnight temperatures than the last few days, with lows generally in the upper 40s to near 50. && .Prev Discussion [732 PM EST]... .Short Term [Tuesday Through Wednesday Night]... A broad, upper-level long wave trough will be situated over much of the eastern CONUS. A short wave trough, currently over the northern CONUS Rockies, will move quickly through our forecast area Tuesday night and early Wednesday, along with a surface cold front. The forecast vertical motion and deep layer moisture fields accompanying this system do not appear to be very impressive. Our Tuesday night PoPs, a blend of different MOS and high-res NWP guidance, range from 50% at Albany, to 20% in our FL zones. The unimpressive forcing & thermodynamics, along with a relatively weak 850 mb jet stream, suggest a low threat for severe thunderstorms across our forecast area. Fair weather will return to the region during the day on Wednesday. Warm temperatures will continue through Tuesday night, followed by a modest cool-down Wednesday night. .Long Term [Thursday Through Monday]... The aforementioned broad, upper-level long wave trough will migrate slowly eastward, while individual short waves translate very quickly across the CONUS. A potent short wave trough and accompanying surface cold front will pass through our forecast area Thursday night, with enough forcing and deep layer moisture for a 30-50% chance of rain (highest across GA & AL). Another trough will move swiftly through the area Saturday night, but forcing and moisture appear too limited for PoPs greater than 10%. Temperatures will not stray too far from climatology through the period. .Aviation... [Through 00Z Wednesday]... Throughout the early evening, VFR conditions will continue. Around 02-05Z, areas of fog are expected to develop and conditions will deteriorate to IFR. The fog will quickly dissipate after sunrise, with VFR conditions by around 13-15Z. .Marine... With a high pressure ridge over the region, winds and seas will remain low through Tuesday. SW winds will increase to moderate levels ahead of an approaching cold front Tuesday night, then shift to the NW and briefly approach advisory levels on Wednesday. .Fire Weather... Drier air will arrive behind a cold front on Wednesday and remain in place through Thursday. At this time, red flag criteria is not expected to to be met, although we could get close in Leon and Wakulla Counties Wednesday afternoon. .Hydrology... Flooding on the Choctawhatchee River continues to diminish. Caryville is now below flood stage and Bruce crested this morning just below 15 feet. The river will fall below flood stage there late this week. Releases from Woodruff should begin to decrease late tonight as inflows from the Chattahoochee are decreasing. Thus expect the Apalachicola at Blountstown to crest later this evening and then begin a slow fall throughout the week. Two systems are expected this week, one Tuesday night and another on Thursday night. The QPF for both systems is light- generally 0.25 inches or less.
