.AVIATION...

OBVIOUSLY A TRICKY TAF FORECAST WITH WINTRY PRECIPITATION IN THE
STATE TONIGHT AND FRIDAY MORNING. CURRENTLY HAVE REMOVED ALL
MENTION OF THUNDER FROM THE TAFS. THAT BEING SAID...THUNDER SNOW
WILL BE POSSIBLE IN THE STATE TONIGHT...GENERALLY IN SOUTH AND
EAST...BUT ISOLATED AND VERY DIFFICULT TO PINPOINT WHERE TO
INCLUDE IN THE TAFS. IFR AND LIFR CONDITIONS WILL BE SEEN
OVERNIGHT WITH VFR CONDITIONS RETURNING AFTER 18Z FRIDAY. A WINTRY
MIX OF PRECIPITATION WILL BE SEEN BEFORE 06Z THIS EVENING WITH
MOSTLY SNOW SEEN AFTER 06Z. PRECIPITATION WILL END AT ALL TAF
SITES BY 15Z. IN ADDITION TO ALL OF THIS...GUSTY NORTH WINDS WILL
BE SEEN OVERNIGHT AND INTO THE FIRST HALF OF FRIDAY.

&&

.PREV DISCUSSION... /ISSUED 308 PM CST THU JAN 21 2016/

SHORT TERM....TONIGHT THROUGH FRIDAY NIGHT

SIGNIFICANT WINTER WEATHER EVENT CONTINUES TO UNFOLD ACROSS THE
COUNTY WARNING AREA AT THIS TIME WITH POSSIBLE HIGH SNOWFALL AMOUNTS
POSSIBLE ACROSS MAINLY EASTERN AND SOUTHEASTERN AREAS. LIGHT RAIN
CURRENTLY FALLING ACROSS SOUTHERN ARKANSAS WHERE TEMPERATURES ARE
STRUGGLING TO GET OUT OF THE MID 30S. FOG AND FREEZING FOG ALSO
PREVALENT ACROSS THE NORTH AND CENTRAL SECTIONS WITH ONLY WIDELY
SCATTERED...PATCHY DRIZZLE...FREEZING DRIZZLE AND FREEZING FOG
SHOWING UP.

LATEST MOISTURE CHANNEL IMAGERY REVEALS A LARGE UPPER LEVEL TROUGH
IN THE NATIONS MID SECTION. EMBEDDED IN THE FEATURE ARE TWO DISTINCT
AREAS OF UPPER LEVEL LOW PRESSURE...THE FIRST A RELATIVELY WEAK ONE
IN CENTRAL KANSAS WITH THE OTHER ONE NEAR THE DALLAS METRO PLEX.
MODELS REMAIN CONSISTENT IN TRANSFERRING THE ENERGY FROM THE KANSAS
LOW TO THE SOUTHERN LOW WITH RAPID DEEPENING TO FOLLOW IN RESPONSE.

SURFACE LOW LOCATED NEAR LUFKIN TEXAS AT THIS TIME AND FORECAST TO
DEEPEN RAPIDLY AND BE LOCATED OVER EAST CENTRAL ALABAMA BY EARLY
FRIDAY. CONFIDENCE CONTINUES TO INCREASE IN A WINTER WEATHER EVENT
VERSUS JUST A FEW DAYS AGO AS SHORT RANGE AND HIGH RES MODELS ALL
BASICALLY ON THE SAME PAGE AT THIS TIME.

AS LOW PASSES TO OUR SOUTH...IT TAKES ON A SLIGHT NEGATIVE TILT AND
PULLS DOWN CONSIDERABLY COLDER AIR. ALL PRECIPITATION TYPES WILL
CHANGE OVER TO ALL SNOW AND IT WILL BE A RELATIVELY QUICK TRANSITION
AND PROLONGED ICING IS NOT EXPECTED. MODELS ALL PICKING UP ON A
TROWEL FEATURE WHICH WILL ENHANCE SNOWFALL RATES AND AMOUNTS.

QUESTION IS WHERE THIS FEATURE EVENTUALLY SETS UP...THE BEST
THINKING NOW IS IT WILL BE OVER THE EAST OR SOUTHEAST. AS A
RESULT...SNOW FALL AMOUNTS HAVE BEEN INCREASED OVER THE SOUTHEAST
PART OF THE COUNTY WARNING AREA WHERE AS MUCH AS 6 INCHES CAN NOT BE
RULED OUT. LESSER AMOUNTS ARE EXPECTED TO THE NORTH AND WEST BUT
EVEN AROUND FOUR INCHES CAN NOT BE DISCOUNTED IN THE LITTLE ROCK
METROPOLITAN AREA.

WINTER STORM WARNINGS WILL CONTINUE IN ITS CURRENT CONFIGURATION AND
THE AREAS CURRENTLY UNDER A WINTER STORM WATCH WILL BE UPGRADED TO A
WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY FOR AN INCH OR TWO OF SNOW. MODELS ARE ALSO
SHOWING CONVECTIVE POTENTIAL SO HEAVIER BANDS OF SNOW CAN NOT BE
DISCOUNTED.

WIND WILL BE ANOTHER STORY WITH THIS STORM SYSTEM AS THE SURFACE LOW
DEEPENS. EASTERN PORTIONS OF THE COUNTY WARNING AREA MAY EVEN FLIRT
WITH BLIZZARD CRITERIA. WHILE EXPECTING WINDS OF 20 TO OVER 30 MPH
POSSIBLE WITH HIGHER GUSTS...NO NOT BELIEVE THE CRITERIA FOR A
BLIZZARD WILL BE MET AND WILL HOLD OFF ON ANY HEADLINES FOR NOW
CONCERNING THIS.

EXPECT THIS SYSTEM TO DEPART THE CWA BY FRIDAY AFTERNOON AT THE
LATEST...WITH PRECIP ENDING FROM WEST TO EAST FRIDAY MORNING. DRIER
CONDITIONS WILL BE SEEN...BUT TEMPERATURES MAY STRUGGLE TO WARM MUCH
FRIDAY AFTERNOON WITH ANY SNOW COVER AND A BREEZY NW WIND. CALMER
CONDITIONS WILL THEN BE SEEN INTO THE FIRST PART OF THE LONG TERM
PERIOD.

LONG TERM...SATURDAY THROUGH THURSDAY

THE UPPER LOW PRESSURE BRINGING THE SNOW TO ARKANSAS TONIGHT WILL BE
ALONG THE EAST COAST BY SATURDAY MORNING AND A LARGE UPPER RIDGE
WILL BE BUILDING OVER THE ROCKIES. THE RIDGE WILL MOVE EAST TO THE
PLAINS SATURDAY AND SUNDAY. BY MONDAY A DEEP UPPER TROUGH WILL MOVE
THROUGH THE NORTHERN PLAINS AND INTO THE GREAT LAKES AREA. TUESDAY
THROUGH THURSDAY...THE TROUGH WILL REMAIN IN THE EAST WITH RIDGING
IN THE WEST.

SURFACE HIGH PRESSURE WILL BUILD OVER ARKANSAS SATURDAY WITH CLEAR
TO PARTLY SKIES. MUCH OF THE EXTENDED FORECAST WILL BE DRY. THERE
WILL BE A SLIGHT CHANCE OF LIGHT RAIN MONDAY AS LOW PRESSURE MOVES
NORTH OF ARKANSAS AND DRAGS A COLD FRONT THROUGH THE STATE. THE RAIN
WILL TAPER OFF IN THE EAST MONDAY EVENING. HIGH PRESSURE WILL BE IN
CONTROL FOR TUESDAY THROUGH THURSDAY.
