AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION National Weather Service Dodge City KS 234 PM CDT TUE OCT 27 2015 ...Updated for Long Term... .SHORT TERM...(THIS EVENING THROUGH Wednesday) ISSUED AT 204 PM CDT TUE OCT 27 2015 For tonight, another upper level shortwave trough will dig across western Kansas by midnight bringing increasing clouds and rain chances. Could have around 1/4 inch of rainfall near and west of Garden City overnight, and lesser amounts elsewhere. The rain should begin in the far west by around 7 to 9 pm, then progress east, then end at Medicine Lodge by around 7 am. An isolated rumble of thunder cannot be ruled out with some weak elevated CAPE. Winds will become gusty at 15 to 30 mph with an associated cold front. Overnight lows will be held up a bit by the cloud cover with lows in the mid to upper 40s. For Wednesday, expect clearing skies behind the upper wave and highs in the low to mid 60s. Northwest winds of 15 to 25 mph will gradually decrease as the surface pressure gradient relaxes. .LONG TERM...(Wednesday NIGHT THROUGH Tuesday) ISSUED AT 231 PM CDT TUE OCT 27 2015 For Wednesday night, models indicate increasing mid to high level cloudiness in the right entrance region of an upper jet. Cold high pressure at the surface will push into western Kansas by morning with light and variable winds becoming light north. Models showing some cold temps around freezing by early Thursday morning, but may not be as cold as the NAM model with increasing clouds. Superblend model output also gave lows just above freezing. So at this time, do not have enough confidence to go with a Freeze Watch. Will add some frost to the grids however. Will have overnight lows from around 33 at Hays to the mid 30s around Dodge City and upper 30s south and west of Dodge City in the thicker cloud cover. For Thursday, skies will be mostly clear with surface high pressure moving east into the Missouri Valley. Winds will become light southeasterly. Highs will be in the mid to upper 50s. For Thursday night into Saturday, upper level storm systems will be moving into the Central Plains. Rain chances will increase from around 20 to 40 percent on Thursday night, to likely by Friday into Saturday morning. Rainfall totals could range from 1/2 inch to 1 inch before the rain ends. Highs will be only in the 50s on Friday, then in the low to mid 60s on Saturday. Overnight lows will be in the 40s.
