A strengthening southeasterly monsoonal circulation continued to spread moisture westward across the south central deserts on June 28th, and this led to the development of isolated afternoon and evening thunderstorms. Some of the stronger storms produced gusty outflow winds estimated to be in excess of 60 mph.

Some of the stronger storms produced gusty outflow winds estimated to be in excess of 60 mph. Strong gusty winds were measured at the official ASOS weather station in Gila Bend. No damages were reported due to the strong winds.

THROUGH THIS WEEK...PERIODIC SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS WILL BE
COMMON ACROSS THE MOUNTAINS OF SOUTHERN AND EASTERN ARIZONA. SEVERAL
EVENINGS WILL CARRY A SLIGHT CHANCE FOR THESE STORMS TO MOVE INTO
THE POPULATED LOWER DESERT AREAS. THE MOST LIKELY OUTCOME IN THOSE
AREAS WILL BE GUSTY WINDS AND SOME BLOWING DUST...BUT VERY LOCALIZED
BRIEF HEAVY RAIN WILL ALSO BE POSSIBLE. AFTERNOON TEMPERATURES WILL
REMAIN SLIGHTLY ABOVE NORMAL THOUGH BELOW THE EXCESSIVE LEVELS
EXPERIENCED THE PAST COUPLE WEEKS.

AFTER A CLEAR MORNING ACROSS ARIZONA...CONVECTION IS QUICKLY
BLOSSOMING EARLY THIS AFTERNOON. THANKS TO THE INCREASED SUNSHINE
TEMPERATURES ARE RUNNING SEVERAL DEGREES ABOVE SAME TIME
YESTERDAY AND DEW POINTS DOWN JUST A LITTLE BIT. 28.12Z KTUS SOUNDING
STILL HAD VERY HIGH PWAT VALUES...ABOUT 1.4 IN AND NEAR RECORD HIGHS
FOR LATE JUNE. SOUTHEAST CALIFORNIA IS CAUGHT IN THE INCREASINGLY
MERIDIONAL FLOW BETWEEN THE GREAT BASIN HIGH AND AN OFF-SHORE LOW AND
THIS HAS HELPED KEEP TEMPERATURES THERE DOWN SEVERAL DEGREES.
FOR THE REST OF TODAY...HI-RES MODELS SHOWED MUCH MORE VARIABILITY IN
THEIR CONVECTIVE DEPICTION THOUGH OVERALL THERE WAS LESS ENTHUSIASM
FOR STRONG OUTFLOW WINDS INTO THE METRO AREA. THIS ISN/T TOO
SURPRISING GIVEN THE EXPECTED SLIGHT DECREASE IN INSTABILITY. THERE
WAS GENERAL AGREEMENT THAT WHAT OUTFLOWS DO FORM WILL MOVE IN
EARLIER...IN THE 3-6PM WINDOW. GIVEN THE QUICKLY THINNING BOUNDARY
LAYER MOISTURE THIS AFTERNOON...IT LOOKS LESS LIKELY THAT THE PHX
METRO AREA WILL SEE CONVECTION OF SUBSTANCE WITH ANY OUTFLOW /NOT TO
SAY A COUPLE OF SHOWERS POPPING OFF WONT HAPPEN/.
THE EASTERLY FLOW DOES SEEM AS IF IT/LL PUSH MORE STORMS ACROSS
SOUTHERN ARIZONA AND ALSO NORTHERN ARIZONA...WHICH MAY CAUSE OUTFLOWS
TO COLLIDE OVER WESTERN MARICOPA...YUMA...AND LA PAZ COUNTIES. THAT
AREA MAY SEE MORE SHOWERS/STORMS THIS EVENING. FURTHER WEST...BEYOND
PERHAPS A FEW SHOWERS EXPECTING IT TO REMAIN DRY UNDER THE MID/UPPER
LEVEL CLOUD CANOPY.
GREAT BASIN HIGH NOW APPEARS IT WILL BIFURCATE...WITH A CHUNK OF
ANOMALOUS TEMPS/HEIGHTS HEADING NORTH TOWARD ALASKA AND THE
REMAINDER SETTLING A BIT FURTHER SOUTH. THAT MEANS OVERALL WHAT WE
SEE TODAY IS GENERALLY WHAT WE/LL GET. REALLY HARD TO PICK OUT ANY
INDIVIDUAL DAY AS BEING MORE ACTIVE AT THIS POINT. CONCEIVABLE THAT
GILA...PINAL AND FAR EASTERN MARICOPA COUNTIES GET DAILY STORMS WHILE
PHOENIX WEST GETS LIMITED ACTIVITY /BESIDES SOME DUSTY WINDS/.
TEMPERATURES WILL NOT MODERATE MUCH AND REMAIN JUST ABOVE SEASONAL
NORMS.

Isolated thunderstorms developed across southwestern Maricopa county during the late afternoon and evening hours on June 28th. Some of the stronger storms produced strong and gusty outflow winds. The official ASOS weather station at Gila Bend measured a wind gust to 64 mph at 1718MST. The gusty winds also generated dense blowing dust, and the weather station reported visibility down to three quarters of a mile as a result. No damages were reported due to the strong wind gusts.
