DISCUSSION...
Latest sfc analysis shows an elongated trough lying N-S across West
Texas/SE NM, under an upper-lvl trough moving thru Texas.
Stratus/fog that has plagued the region over the past 36 hours has
eroded, as strong westerlies rounding the base of the trough have
mixed down to the sfc, resulting in gusty conditions over much of
the CWA. Warnings/Advisories cover current conditions, and will be
allowed to expire at 00Z. To the north, a cold front is barreling
southward, entering the Panhandles, and should fropa KMAF at around
08Z, according to latest buffer soundings. Unfortunately, today's
warmer weather will end w/the arrival of the front, which will
plunge the area back into well-below normal temperatures for at
least the next couple of days. Models handled this last front/event
poorly, and tried to clear out/warm back up too quickly, and look to
possibly do so again. W/plenty of cloud cover expected behind the
front for the next few days, we expect much less diurnal range in
temps than what guidance is selling, and so prefer the warmer side
of mins, and the lower side of maxes. NE zones should stay
subfreezing thru Thursday. We don't expect to begin warming until
after Thursday, when winds veer to return flow, and cloud cover
begins to dissipate.
As the sfc ridge slides south behind the front, pressure gradients
are forecast to tighten up Wednesday night over SE NM, and gap winds
thru Guadalupe Pass should rise into warning territory overnight.
Models still bring a shortwave thru the region Wednesday night,
which could interact w/modest isentropic lift to generate a little
precip over the area. However, latest forecast soundings are drier
in the upper levels than models have advertised the last couple of
days, so the question remains as to precip type for much of the
area. Models do bring in a saturated layer H5-H6 or so for a
feeder-seeder scenario, so we've left a slight chance of SN over the
nrn 2/3rds of the CWA, and IP/FZRA south. However, QPFs remain
light, so POPs remain small.
As mentioned above, West Texas/SE NM should begin climbing out of
the soup Friday, warming up to a few degrees below normal Saturday,
before a secondary cold front moves into the area Saturday night.
The ECMWF and GFS are now in agreement on timing, and fropa KMAF at
around 06Z Sunday. ATTM, this front does not look to be as strong
as tonight's, and w/less cloud cover, so expect a quicker recovery
on temps. In fact, forecast soundings/temp fields suggest temps
could hit normal or better Monday afternoon, and possibly Tuesday.
Next chance of precip in the extended looks to be Tuesday, when
models bring an upper trough thru the area. Extended grids stay dry
for now, though.
