...UPDATE TO AVIATION...

.SHORT TERM...(This evening through Monday) ISSUED AT 200 PM CST
SUN JAN 26 2014

The forecast for the overnight presents a mixed bag of confidence
with respect to both wind speeds and precipitation chances. The next
cold front will be drive through southwest Kansas this evening,
ushering drier and colder air. The magnitude of the winds could be
marginally near the wind advisory criteria for much of the forecast
area, based on WRF 0-1 KM windspeeds and lapse rates, and slightly
stronger GFS MOS and LAMP maximum output of around 26-30 knots
sustained. These stronger and gusty winds should primarily be post
frontal for just a few hours before tapering through 12 UTC Monday.
The wind advisory was extended spatially farther west to around
highway 83 for the same time duration. Given the cold air and
relative humidity indicated by the forecast soundings, it would be
reasonable to expect flurries as well behind the boundary overnight.
The WRF (ARW/NMM) models all develop light QPF and very light snow
accumulations. It is possible for some areas, especially locations
north and west of Dodge City to receive a dusting of snow given the
broken sloping frontogenesis through a sufficiently saturated
atmospheric column well in the preferred dendritic zone. As the cold
air settles in overnight with surface high pressure moving equatorward,
much colder highs are expected on Monday afternoon with continued light
to breezy northerly and weakening cold advection through early
evening.

.LONG TERM...(Monday night through Sunday)
ISSUED AT 200 PM CST SUN JAN 26 2014

Another shortwave trough moves from the Northern High Plains across
the Central Plains on Tuesday with a chance for light snow. The best
chances for some light accumulations look to be from near Garden
City to Meade and west with a dusting to around 1/2 inch. Some
flurries are also possible across the rest of southwest and south
central Kansas into the afternoon with some minor lift associated
with the upper level wave. The new NAM model really lowers the
chances for any accumulating snow at all, but will hedge toward the
GFS model that keeps some light snow in the area. The GFS looks
better with some upward lift and higher relative humidities for some
light snow. Overnight lows on Monday night will be only in single
digits to teens with light northeast winds becoming southwest by
morning. Highs for Tuesday will be around 30 with light southwest
winds shifting to the northwest with the upper trough.

A pattern change then looks to be in the forecast into next Weekend
with the upper flow transitioning from the cold north to northwest
flow aloft to more of a zonal flow pattern. Some southern branch
waves then begin to break across the United States towards the
Weekend. Wednesday looks to be the warmest, ahead of the next cold
front on Thursday, with highs from the upper 40s to lower 50s and
windy south to southwest winds of 20 to 30 mph. Highs then fall back
into the 40s for Friday and Saturday, and into the 30s on Sunday
with another cold front. Overnight lows warm from teens on Wednesday
night and into the 20s into the Weekend.

.AVIATION...(For the 00Z TAFS through 00Z Monday evening)
ISSUED AT 510 PM CST SUN JAN 26 2014

VFR conditions will prevail at all TAF sites through late this evening.
However, low level stratus will develop behind a cold front as it
pushes southward across central and western Kansas tonight. MVFR cigs
may be possible in the vicinity of all TAF sites generally after 06Z.
A few flurries, and even a brief show shower, will be possible near
KHYS late this evening. As for winds, a strong cold front will push
southward across western Kansas this evening turning winds northerly
25 to 35kt and gusty overnight. The winds will gradually subside
below 20kt toward sunrise as surface high pressure in the Northern
Plains sinks south into Kansas.
