AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION...UPDATED
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE LITTLE ROCK AR
1138 PM CST TUE DEC 31 2013

.AVIATION...
VFR CONDITIONS WILL PREVAIL THROUGH MUCH OF THE TAF CYCLE. COLD
FRONT WILL MOVE INTO NORTHERN ARKANSAS AFTER 02/02Z...WITH WINDS
BECOMING WEST/NORTHWEST BEHIND THE FRONT. HAVE ADDED VCSH AS
PRECIP WILL MAINLY BE POST FRONTAL AND JUST PAST THIS TAF CYCLE.
ACROSS THE SOUTH...MUCH OF THE RAINFALL WILL STAY SOUTH OF THE
STATE...BUT STRATUS WILL MOVE IN AFTER 02/00Z BRINGING MVFR CIGS.
&&

.PREV DISCUSSION... /ISSUED 228 PM CST TUE DEC 31 2013/

SHORT TERM...TONIGHT THROUGH FRIDAY NIGHT
LOCAL SURFACE OBSERVATIONS INDICATE TEMPERATURES HAVE WARMED
CONSIDERABLY FROM MORNING LOWS...WITH MOST LOCATIONS AT OR EXPECTED
TO REACH ABOVE NORMAL VALUES. EXPECT ANOTHER SUBSTANTIAL DIURNAL
RANGE OF TEMPERATURES THROUGH TOMORROW AFTERNOON.

SHORT WAVE ENERGY IS FORECAST TO DEEPEN AS IT APPROACHES THE MID
SOUTH EARLY IN THIS PERIOD. THIS ENERGY WILL SUPPORT ANOTHER COLD
SURGE ACROSS MUCH OF THE EASTERN HALF OF THE U.S. FORECAST
Q-VECTORS INDICATE A STRONG ATMOSPHERIC RESPONSE TO THE
APPROACHING ENERGY. HOWEVER...AVAILABLE MOISTURE WILL BE LIMITED
ACROSS THE STATE. ANY WINTER ACCUMULATIONS SHOULD BE LIGHT...WITH
THE BEST CHANCE FOR ACCUMULATIONS ACROSS REGIONS ALONG THE
MISSOURI BORDER.

THE AIR MASS ASSOCIATED WITH THIS SYSTEM WILL PROVIDE SIGNIFICANTLY
COLDER...AND WELL BELOW NORMAL TEMPERATURES.

LONG TERM...SATURDAY THROUGH TUESDAY
TEMPERATURES WILL BE WARMED BACK TO NEAR NORMAL ON SATURDAY...JUST
IN TIME FOR THE NEXT COLD FRONT TO PUSH THROUGH THE MID SOUTH LATE
SATURDAY/SUNDAY. LOWS ON SATURDAY NIGHT WILL BE IN THE UPPER 20S TO
MID 30S SO A WINTRY MIX CAN BE EXPECTED ONCE AGAIN. THE RAIN/SNOW
LINE OVERNIGHT WILL BE JUST NORTH OF THE I-40 CORRIDOR...WHERE
ANYTHING SOUTH WILL STAY MAINLY LIQUID. TEMPS SHOULD WARM INTO THE
MID 30S TO LOWER 40S THROUGH THE DAY SUNDAY...WITH A CHANGE OVER TO
ALL LIQUID EXPECTED. PRECIP WILL BE TAPERING OFF BY SUNSET...HOWEVER
THE MOISTURE WILL WRAP AROUND THE DEPARTING SYSTEM ALLOWING FOR
POSSIBLY A BRIEF CHANGE OVER TO LIGHT SNOW LATE SUNDAY NIGHT/EARLY
MONDAY ACROSS NORTH ARKANSAS.

GFS/ECMWF ARE SUGGESTING ANYWHERE FROM ONE TO THREE INCH
ACCUMULATIONS ACROSS THE AR/MO BORDER...WITH NEAR HALF OF AN INCH A
FEW COUNTIES SOUTH. AGAIN THERE IS MUCH TO DECIPHER IN THE COMING
DAYS...WHERE DETAILS WILL BE FINE TUNED. MONDAY/TUESDAY WILL BE COOL
AND DRY...WITH TUESDAY THE COLDEST AS AN ARCTIC HIGH SETS UP TO OUR
NORTH AND COLD AIR SPILLS DOWN FROM CANADA.
