AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION...UPDATED
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE NORMAN OK
927 PM CST TUE DEC 31 2013
.UPDATE...
TONIGHT/S FORECAST IS IN GREAT SHAPE...AND MADE ONLY VERY MINOR
ADJUSTMENTS TO HOURLY GRIDS. EXPANDED RAIN/SNOW CHANCES ACROSS
LARGER PART OF NORTHERN OKLAHOMA WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON.
&&
.DISCUSSION...
MOSTLY CLEAR WEATHER WILL RING IN THE NEW YEAR.
EXPANDED THE RAIN/SNOW CHANCES ACROSS A LARGER PART OF NORTHERN
OKLAHOMA ON WEDNESDAY AS LATEST MODELS...PARTICULARLY THE
NAM/WRF...HAVE BEEN SUGGESTING THAT THE PRECIPITATION MAY
ARRIVE 3 HOURS EARLIER THAN PREVIOUSLY FORECAST. PRECIPITATION
MAY BEGIN AS LIGHT RAIN BUT APPEARS TO CHANGE TO SNOW DUE TO
EVAPORATIONAL COOLING. A QUICK 1 TO 3 HOUR BURST OF SNOW MAY
ACCUMULATE TO NEAR AN INCH MAINLY ON ELEVATED AND GRASSY SURFACES
OVER FAR NORTHERN OKLAHOMA ON NEW YEARS DAY...MAINLY BETWEEN 3 PM
AND MIDNIGHT NEAR MEDFORD AND PONCA CITY. ROAD TEMPERATURES
SHOULD BE RATHER WARM...SO SIGNIFICANT TRAVEL IMPACTS SEEM
UNLIKELY. WILL CONTINUE TO MONITOR.
PRODUCTS HAVE BEEN UPDATED.
MBS
&&
.PREV DISCUSSION... /ISSUED 602 PM CST TUE DEC 31 2013/
AVIATION...
SKIES WILL BE MOSTLY CLEAR OVERNIGHT. NAM MOS SUGGESTS THE CHANCE
OF IFR CEILINGS AT KCSM AND KHBR IN THE 12-15Z TIME FRAME TOMORROW
MORNING... BUT RIGHT NOW BELIEVE THAT THE PROBABILITY IS LOW
ENOUGH THAT IT HAS NOT BEEN INCLUDED IN THE TAFS AT THIS TIME...
BUT WILL CONTINUE TO WATCH FOR THAT POSSIBILITY. A COLD FRONT WILL
MOVE THROUGH THE AREA WEDNESDAY MORNING /AROUND 12Z AT KGAG TO
AROUND 22Z AT KSPS/ WITH GUSTY NORTH WINDS EXPECTED AFTER PASSAGE
OF THE FRONT.
PREV DISCUSSION... /ISSUED 301 PM CST TUE DEC 31 2013/
DISCUSSION...
DOWNSLOPE FLOW HAS REALLY WARMED THINGS UP THIS AFTERNOON
ESPECIALLY ACROSS WESTERN AND NORTHWESTERN OK. SFC WINDS AROUND 8
TO 10 KT TONIGHT WILL ALSO KEEP OVERNIGHT LOWS FROM DROPPING MUCH
BELOW FREEZING FOR MANY LOCATIONS AS A LEE LOW SLIDES SOUTH OVER
THE PANHANDLE. THIS LOW WILL CONTINUE TO DROP INTO WESTERN N TX
TOMORROW AFTERNOON AND EVENING WITH A COLD FRONT MOVING INTO
NORTHERN OK BEFORE LUNCH. ABOVE AVERAGE TEMPS ARE EXPECTED NEAR
THE RED RIVER VALLEY TOMORROW AFTERNOON WITHIN PREFRONTAL WARM
ZONE...WHILE NORMAL TO SLIGHTLY BELOW AVG TEMPS IMPACT NORTHERN
AND CENTRAL OK. SNOW STILL LOOKS VERY LIKELY TOMORROW NIGHT ACROSS
NORTHERN OK WHERE SOME LOCATIONS LIKE PONCA CITY COULD PICK UP A
QUICK INCH OR INCH AND A HALF AS THE SHORTWAVE TROUGH...CURRENTLY
SEEN MOVING INTO THE INTERMOUNTAIN WEST...TRAVERSES THIS REGION
THROUGH EARLY THURS AM. IMPACTS SHOULD REMAIN LOW GIVEN THE SPEED
AND NATURE OF THE WAVE (LOW QPF)...ALTHOUGH AN ADVISORY MAY
EVENTUALLY BE NEEDED FOR SOME NORTHERN COUNTIES.
A SFC RIDGE WILL SETTLE OVERHEAD THURSDAY MORNING BEHIND THE
FRONT AND TEMPS WILL PLUMMET AGAIN UNDER GENERALLY CLEAR SKIES.
WIND SPEEDS ACROSS THE SOUTHERN HALF OF THE FA WILL KEEP THEM FROM
DROPPING MUCH BELOW THE MID 20S. HOWEVER...SOME SNOW PACK ACROSS
THE NNE CLOSER TO THE RIDGE AXIS WHERE WEAKER WINDS ARE EXPECTED
COULD RESULT IN SOME LOW TEMPS APPROACHING THE SINGLE DIGITS.
ANOTHER LEE TROUGH IS EXPECTED FRI THROUGH AT LEAST THE FIRST HALF
OF SATURDAY WITH THE LOW LEVEL FLOW RETURNING FROM THE SOUTH. THIS
WILL WARM THINGS BACK UP AGAIN BEFORE ANOTHER STRONG COLD FRONT
IMPACTS SOUTHERN PLAINS SATURDAY NIGHT. THE CULPRIT FOR THIS
AIRMASS WILL BE A DEEP LONGWAVE TROUGH MOVING ACROSS THE CENTRAL
AND NORTHERN/NE CONUS THROUGH EARLY NEXT WEEK. GIVEN RECENT
TRENDS...EXPECTED AVG 850MB TEMPS...AND FAIRLY GOOD AGREEMENT
BETWEEN THE GFS AND ECMWF HAVE DROPPED TEMPS SEVERAL DEGREES EACH
DAY THROUGH THE EXTENDED. MONDAY MAY BE THE COLDEST DAY OUT OF THE
NEXT SEVEN...WITH HIGHS RANGING FROM THE LOW 20S TO UPPER 30S
NORTH TO SOUTH RESPECTIVELY.
