Arctic high pressure began to build across the region from the overnight hours of the 30th into the 31st. This was the start of an extended interval of extremely cold temperatures which persisted into early January. Overnight low temperatures from the 30th into the 31st fell to 10 to 20 below zero across northern areas...with single digits below zero Downeast. High temperatures on the 31st struggled to rise above zero across northern areas...with generally single digits above zero Downeast.
